Why should I talk with a landscape designer before installing a pool?
We are often asked to develop a landscape plan after a pool has been installed. Starting with this singular focus, or “pool-first” approach, can be a mistake.
Pools are usually the centerpiece of a landscape, and it is important to consider how an element like a pool best fits your overall property, as well as your future plans. Without this consideration, the outcome of a pool installation is in jeopardy of being sub-par or even problematic. Landscape design considers how existing and proposed elements will optimally connect and harmonize as part of a more extensive landscape system. Here are some considerations when adding a pool:
1. Where is the best sun exposure?
2. What are the opportunities to connect the pool to the house and adjacent entertaining areas (patio, fire pit, or outdoor kitchen)?
3. What size should the pool deck be?
4. What are the storage and pool accessibility options for users of various ages?
5. What planting opportunities will exist after installation?
6. How can a required fence be aesthetically blended into the landscape?
7. How can the pool be located to maximize privacy?
8. What opportunities or limitations do existing structures and the current terrain of the property present?
9. How would building a pool now impact the construction of future planned projects?
We occasionally run into a project where some crucial decisions have happened out of sequence. A pool may already be installed, valuable trees may have been needlessly cut down, and an additional structure like a pool house may be underway. In these circumstances, the landscape design process is often restricted to less than ideal solutions to possible site issues.
If you are thinking about installing a pool, contact a landscape designer first. In doing so, you will be making decisions that encompass the larger picture and not just one element. The result will be a better return on your swimming pool investment. You will not only end up with an outdoor space that will function better and be more sustainable, but you will ultimately own a pool that you will enjoy more.
