The Beloved Bulldogs of Bedford: Meet Bogey, Louie, Lucy, and Wookie.

Bulldogs are a distinctive and beloved breed, known for their stocky build, wrinkled face, and characteristic pushed-in nose. Originally bred in England in the 1600s for bull-baiting—a now-outlawed sport—bulldogs have since transformed into gentle, affectionate companions. Despite their tough exterior, these dogs are known for their loyal and friendly nature, often forming strong bonds with their families. Bulldogs are typically calm and laid-back, making them great pets for households with children or other animals. Though they may appear intimidating, bulldogs are truly soft-hearted dogs with a loving disposition, making them a popular choice for families and dog lovers alike.

And there's nothing that represents Bedford more than the Bulldog. To celebrate these adorable, wrinkled furballs, we’d like to introduce you to three special bulldogs who call Bedford home.

Bogey

Meet Bogey, a one-year-old red and white Bulldog who is as rolly-polly as they come. Short and stout, Bogey was adopted from a breeder in New Hampshire, making him the third Bulldog in his family. Finding the right breeder is crucial with this breed, and Bogey's family knew they had found the perfect match when they met him and his brothers at six weeks old. From that moment, it was love at first sight.

Bogey is a quintessential Bulldog—he loves to sleep in and always wants to be with a family member. He enjoys walks, running outside, and, most of all, playing with his many toys. In fact, Bogey is so fond of his toys that he visits his toy bin daily, carefully selecting which ones he wants to play with. This playful pup has three different barks, each corresponding to a different request he might have. While he is playful, affectionate, and silly, Bogey can also be a bit stubborn, especially when he’s in the mood for some mischief.

Bogey’s favorite pastime includes running through the kids' sandbox like a wild dog, and he's mastered commands like "sit," "give paw," and "fetch." He's incredibly close to his family, especially his mom, dad, and two human brothers, whom he treats as his own siblings. Whether it’s chasing them around, barking at them, or just hanging out, Bogey’s bond with his family is unbreakable.

Taking care of a Bulldog like Bogey requires regular baths, nail trims, and keeping those iconic wrinkles clean and dry. Bulldogs are generally content with lounging around but do need regular exercise and playtime to stay happy. Training is essential to ensure they know who’s in charge, as Bulldogs can be strong-willed.

Bogey is the third Bulldog in his family, and they can’t imagine life without one. The joy, laughter, companionship, and happiness that Bogey brings to the family are irreplaceable. His human brothers adore him, and their interactions with him are filled with love and fun. Having a Bulldog like Bogey truly makes a house feel like a home.

Louie

Louie is a four-year-old Olde English Bulldogge with a unique look—he has wrinkles, a major underbite, and a rare "lilac" nose. Unlike the stocky English Bulldog, Louie has an athletic build and stands a bit taller. Louie joined his family in June 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, after the family had spent three years without a Bulldog following the passing of their previous one. When they found a breeder in Northfield, NH, they knew Louie was the perfect addition to their family.

From the moment Louie arrived home as a tiny tan and white pup with blue eyes, he captured their hearts. Louie’s daily routine is one of relaxation and family time. He enjoys sleeping in, having breakfast, and then heading back to bed for more rest. During the school year, he loves joining his human siblings on their trips to school or the bus stop, as he absolutely loves car rides. After a nap, Louie enjoys an afternoon walk and some sunbathing on the deck, waiting for his siblings to come home. Evenings are spent playing, relaxing, and enjoying dinner with the family.

Louie’s love for food often finds him in the kitchen, trying to "help" with meal prep. Despite his sweet and lovable nature, Louie can be stubborn, particularly during long walks—when he’s had enough, he’ll simply sit down in the middle of the road until he’s ready to head back home.

Like most Bulldogs, Louie is a wonderful family pet—loyal, lovable, and great with children. He has brought immense joy to his family with his sweet and funny personality, and they can’t imagine life without him.

Grooming Louie is fairly simple; he’s fine with baths at home, especially when treats and his favorite humans are involved. However, Louie does have seasonal allergies and requires some special care, including allergy medicine and medicated pads for his paws.

For those considering a Bulldog, Louie’s family advises that they’re perfect for busy households. Bulldogs don’t require extensive exercise and are quite content with lounging and sunbathing. They thrive on human attention and are very social, making them ideal companions.

Louie has completed his family, and they feel blessed to have him in their lives. Bulldogs like Louie are always there for their families, offering unconditional love, protection, and endless smiles. The joy that Louie brings is immeasurable, and his family couldn’t be happier to have him.

Lucy

Lucy is a COVID puppy, born on December 3, 2020, and she shares the same dad as her Bulldog friend, Louie. Lucy was adopted from Bigcity Bulldogges and has become a beloved member of her family.

Lucy is a mama’s girl through and through. Since her mom works from home, Lucy is by her side all day, providing constant companionship. She loves to cuddle, sleep, and run around the house, chasing turkeys, squirrels, and chipmunks. Car rides are another favorite of Lucy’s, as she enjoys sitting up in the passenger seat and taking in the sights.

Despite being a female, Lucy is not a fan of going to the spa, making her a unique character in her own right. However, she loves chasing the Frisbee and playing ball with the kids. Lucy would sleep all day, content in her cozy world if given the chance.

Lucy’s affectionate nature and playful spirit have made her a cherished member of her family. She’s brought so much joy during the challenging times of the pandemic, and her family couldn’t imagine life without her. Whether she’s snuggling up with her mom or playing in the yard, Lucy’s presence makes every day brighter.

Wookie

Wookie is a three-year-old Lilac English Bulldog who has become the heart of his family. His unique coloring makes him appear lighter in certain photos, adding to his distinct charm. Wookie’s face is adorned with so many folds that his family has stopped counting, but he loves getting scratches on every one of them. This affectionate Bulldog came into the lives of Stacy and Michael by chance after they lost their beloved American Bulldog, Sweet Pea. A friend suggested a Bulldog breeder in New York, and it was there they found Wookie, a young Bulldog in need of rehoming. His Star Wars-inspired name caught Michael’s attention, while Stacy fell in love with his rolls and the playful smile on his face.

From the moment they met in February, Wookie has been inseparable from Stacy. He follows a strict daily routine, ensuring her safety and well-being with a mix of nibbling on his kibble and trying to sit on her lap despite weighing 70 pounds. Wookie’s protective nature extends to guarding Stacy from his greatest fear—balloons, which he believes are dragons that must be defeated.

Wookie’s bond with Stacy is profound; he has been her biggest fan since day one. Whenever she returns after being away, Wookie greets her with excited butt wiggles, jumps, and kisses. His playful antics and loving demeanor have brought immeasurable joy to their lives, making Wookie a cherished family member. Whether he’s licking an ear or lounging nearby, Wookie’s presence fills their home with happiness.  His birthday is October 4th, Stacy's is October 6th, and Michael's is October 7th, so we are all celebrating together.

These Bulldogs are more than just pets; they are beloved family members who bring joy, laughter, and unconditional love into their homes. Their unique personalities and endearing quirks make them true treasures in the Bedford community. For anyone considering adding a Bulldog to their family, these stories highlight just how much these wrinkled, lovable dogs can enrich your life.
