MAO Design

How can MAO Design help me and my home?

MAO Design is an interior design firm offering comprehensive design services for residential and commercial projects in the north Boston and southern New Hampshire area. Complementing our design services is access to a curated selection of products, including furniture, artwork, lighting, decor, and textiles. We also offer occupied and vacant staging solutions for real estate professionals, sellers, and developers. MAO Design firm's experience and extensive network enable us to customize a unique design plan for each client and see the project through, from design discovery to implementation. We help from concept to completion, from initial brainstorming sessions to the final hanging of artwork. We provide full-service interior design assistance that relieves clients' stress and makes the design process enjoyable.

Our design team consists of three full-time interior designers:
  • Meaghan O'Neil (design director/owner)
  • Renee Tolios (senior interior designer)
  • Meghan Weilbrenner (designer)
We have over 20 years of experience in the hospitality, commercial, and residential interior design industry. Two of our team members hold an NCIDQ certification from the National Certification of Interior Designers (the highest certification in the industry) and are active parts of the IIDA (International Interior Design Association) and ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) industries.

Building off of our experience in the hotel industry, we make careful choices when selecting durable, long-lasting, and easy to clean finishes, creating a substantial visual impact. Our eye for finish selections pairs with the ability to complete technical construction drawings, creating aesthetically pleasing and functional spaces.

What is the design process for your clients?

The design process is a carefully crafted, fluid experience. There are 5 phases within the design process: Discovery, Schematic, Design Development, Construction Drawing, and Construction Administration. These can look slightly different from project to project and client to client. Our discovery phase is when we get a better understanding of the client, their preferences, and aesthetics. The schematic phase is one of the most exciting phases, where we use 3D renderings and mood boards to interpret the space. The design development and construction drawing phases are highly technical and consist of computer drafting and final selections of materials and finishes. The construction administration phase is critical to ensure the correct finishes, materials, framing sizes, and lighting are implemented and installed.

Does MAO Design have the ability to work within multiple computer programs?

Yes, through our education, training, and experience, we can seamlessly work with various computer programs such as AutoCAD, Revit, Chief Architect, 20/20, and SketchUp. This allows us to effectively communicate with the construction team and creates a seamless conversation between architects, builders, and millworkers.

I am not sure what I want to change or if I even want to take on an entire renovation/design project. Does MAO Design offer consultations?

Yes, MAO Design offers consultations for clients who are uncertain about the project's scope, unclear about what to focus their time/money on, or clients who need some expert advice on design decisions they are working through on their home or business space. We are happy to meet with clients to brainstorm, collaborate on the big picture, or agonize over minute details.

I need more time to decide how to proceed; what is your advice?

Making renovations to your home or business can feel overwhelming. We always recommend starting with a vision board, gathering images of comparable projects from magazines or Pinterest, and compiling them either on a virtual or physical board. This will help narrow the focus of the design intent while creating a hierarchy of needs, providing clarity on how you would like to proceed.
