Meet Daisy & Dixie!

We have lived in the neighborhood for six years, and one of the things we love most is getting to enjoy it with our two sweet dachshunds, Daisy and Dixie.

Daisy is our 15-year-old female dachshund, and Dixie is our 13-year-old female dachshund. Both of them came into our family in special ways. Dixie was rescued as a puppy from our veterinarian, and Daisy came to us when she was 2 1/2 years old after being surrendered by a neighbor. From the very beginning, both girls found their way into our hearts.

There is a special story behind each of their names. Dixie came to us around Christmas time, and the song Christmas in Dixie was playing, so her name felt like the perfect fit. Daisy had a different name when she came to us, but we felt she deserved a fresh start. We chose the name Daisy because she was as beautiful as a daisy, and it paired so well with Dixie’s name.

Dixie and Daisy have very different personalities, and that is part of what makes them so special. Dixie has a tremendous amount of energy and is like a wind-up toy first thing in the morning when we get up. She loves to burrow under the covers and has to sleep touching her momma. Even though she is the smaller baby, she is definitely in charge. She also loves swimming in her little pool and catching miniature tennis balls.

Daisy is much more laid-back and calm. She sleeps in the bed under the covers too, but she does not need to be touching anyone. She is in charge of barking and finding the best sunny spot to roll around in the yard. Both of them love their daily walks with Mom and Dad.
They each have their own unique little talents. Dixie likes to boss everyone around, eat her food faster than Daisy, and race Daisy to the front door after a walk. Daisy likes to tell us when it is time for meals, sometimes a little too early, do a little “circle” dance for treats, and “flirt” with anyone who might give her an extra pet for the day.

Their favorite toys are the small ones that fit easily in their mouths, and their very favorite treats are the homemade ones Mom makes for them.
Some of our favorite memories with them are playing with Dixie in the pool and remembering how much Daisy loved walking on the beach with me when we lived in Florida. Those moments have been especially sweet and memorable.

Around the neighborhood, they love walking around Greenthread Park, where they have built quite the “Dixie-Daisy” fan club. Many children yell their names and run over to pet them. Daisy and Dixie love the attention and soak up every bit of it.

They are also wonderful travel companions. In the summer, we travel with Dixie and Daisy to the Rockies, and they love the adventure. They have been to the Continental Divide, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota, Montana, and New Mexico. They have also traveled to Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, and they have even lived in Florida and Louisiana.

Daisy and Dixie have brought so much joy, laughter, and love into our lives. Whether they are soaking up the sunshine, greeting their neighborhood fans, or joining us on a new adventure, they make every day a little more special.
