There’s No Place Like This Place

Celebrating 175 Years of the YMCA

For nearly two centuries, the YMCA has been more than just a place to swim or break a sweat, it has been the heartbeat of communities across the globe. This year, we are popping the confetti and pulling out the archives as we celebrate a monumental milestone: the 175th Anniversary of the YMCA.
Here in the Del Ray, we know a thing or two about community. We pride ourselves on our walkable streets – Where Main Street Still Exists – and the way we show up for one another. It’s that same spirit of community that has fueled the YMCA as an organization since 1851.
A Legacy of "This Place"
What makes "this place" so special? Is it the sight of a child catching their first breath of air after a successful swim stroke? Is it the morning coffee huddle of seniors who have been meeting in our lobby for decades? Or perhaps it’s the peace of mind a working parent feels knowing their child is in a safe, nurturing after-school program?
Looking Ahead
In Del Ray, the Y serves as a bridge between our history and our future. As we celebrate 175 years as an organization, we aren't just looking back at old photographs; we are looking forward to how we can continue to serve you for the next century. Whether you’ve been a member for thirty years or are just now thinking about stepping through our doors, this year is for you.
The Y isn't just a building; it’s a living, breathing ecosystem of empowerment. Throughout the remainder of this year, with special thanks to Rooftop Chimney Sweeps for regularly sponsoring this new monthly column, we will be taking a deep dive into the history, the people, and the future of the YMCA Alexandria.  As you will see there is no place like this place.
