Code Rising and Casa Chirilagua Launch Bold STEAM Education Initiative

Three-Year Partnership to Deliver Year-Round, Bilingual STEAM Programming for Chirilagua Youth

Bright minds and big dreams are rising in Chirilagua, thanks to a new partnership bringing STEAM learning to the heart of Alexandria. Code Rising, a nonprofit focused on educational equity through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math), recently launched a three-year partnership with Casa Chirilagua to bring year-round, bilingual STEAM education to youth in Alexandria’s Chirilagua neighborhood.

The Role of Code Rising
Launching in 2025, the initiative will deliver culturally affirming learning experiences for students in grades K–12. The program aims to prepare students not only for academic achievement, but for long-term participation in an increasingly digital economy.
“At Code Rising, we are building pathways to empowerment through STEAM,” said Michelle Millben, CETnership reflects our long-term commitment to investing in youth who are often overlooked by for the fastest-growing and highest-paying jobs in STEAM in the US economy.”
Millben, whose own career in STEAM began while serving in the White House, added: “I was proud to support the President’s efforts to expand federal investment in STEM education, and at Code Rising, we continue to support of our nation’s strategies to increase STEAM awareness and participation. We love our students, and we are honored to serve Alexandria by expanding STEAM access, creating community, cultivating leadership and contributing to the preparation of Alexandria’s future workforce.”

Serving Our Neighbors

Casa Chirilagua, a community-rooted organization serving Alexandria’s Latin American community, brings deep expertise in youth development and family engagement to the partnership.
“This partnership is a testament to what’s possible when we believe in the brilliance of
our youth and the strength of our families,” said Hjarman Cordero, Executive Director of
Casa Chirilagua. “By weaving STEAM education into the fabric of our community, we’re
building a legacy of hope, leadership, and opportunity.”
Millben noted that this initiative is also a model for broader civic innovation.
“We are piloting a scalable, community-rooted approach to workforce development,”
said Millben. “Every student we reach brings us one step closer to a more just,
innovative, and inclusive future.”
