Holiday Season Reminds Us That We Are Not Alone

Holidays are my favorite time of year. One of my beloved traditions is the lighting of the Christmas tree in Market Square in November. I remember my first tree lighting ceremony as a member of the City Council. From the stage, you can see the anticipation and excitement on each child’s face as they patiently wait for Santa to arrive on the DASH bus. Then the countdown begins…ten…nine…eight…For a moment, time stands still as the entire community comes together in joy and community (and in hope the lights work).

And, the best part is that it doesn’t end there. Not only does the first week of December kick off Del Ray’s Tree and Menorah lighting and Luminaries ceremony, it also sees one of Alexandria’s most anticipated events, the Scottish Christmas Walk Parade. Marching bands, bagpipers, Scottish clans, and families join to celebrate the city’s Scottish roots and spirit of togetherness. Residents and visitors alike have described the parade as a scene from a Hallmark movie.

These events remind us that the holidays in Alexandria are not only about celebration, but also about honoring our shared traditions while welcoming the joy and promise of community. When chaos surrounds us, community becomes the steady heartbeat that reminds us - we’re not alone.
