Howl-o-ween in Del Ray

Costumes, Candy, and Canine Safety

Every October, Del Ray transforms into one of the most festive neighborhoods in Alexandria. Porches glow with pumpkins, families line Mt. Vernon Avenue, and costumed pups take center stage in the annual Del Ray Halloween Parade — one of the community’s most beloved traditions.

But as much fun as Halloween brings, it also comes with a few hazards for our four-legged friends. Here are some tips to keep your pup happy, healthy, and ready to for Halloween fun in style:

Costume Fun (Without the Frights)
Dog costumes are a highlight of the parade, but comfort and safety come first:
• Choose breathable, lightweight materials.
• Avoid anything that blocks vision, restricts movement, or has small parts that could be chewed or eaten.
• Make sure you plan for your dog's leash and harness to attach. Not all costumes take this into consideration.
• Try on costumes before the big day — a dress rehearsal during your evening walk down “The Avenue” can help your pup get used to the look and the attention!

Treats That Are Tricks (and Dangerous) for Dogs
With candy bowls out for trick-or-treaters, it’s tempting for curious noses to investigate. Keep in mind:
• Chocolate, xylitol (in sugar-free candy), and raisins are dangerous for dogs.
• Stash human treats out of reach and let kids know not to share with pets.
• For a safe alternative, grab a bag of dog treats so your pup can enjoy something special too.

A Pumpkin Treat Just for Pups
Pumpkin is both seasonal and healthy for dogs in moderation. Try this easy recipe before parade day:

Pumpkin & Peanut Butter Bites
• 1 cup canned pumpkin (unsweetened, no spices)
• ½ cup peanut butter (xylitol-free)
• 2 cups whole wheat flour

Mix pumpkin and peanut butter together, then stir in flour until dough is firm. Roll out, cut into fun shapes (bones or pumpkins), and bake at 350°F for 20 minutes. Cool completely before sharing with your pup — or with their dog friends at the parade.

Celebrate Safely in Del Ray
The Del Ray Halloween Parade is more than just costumes; it’s a neighborhood celebration of community, family, and of course, our dogs. With a little planning — a safe costume, a watchful eye on the candy bowl, and maybe a batch of homemade pumpkin treats — you and your pup can enjoy all the spooky fun Del Ray has to offer. Here’s to a safe and tail-wagging Howl-o-ween, Del Ray!
