Paw-liday Prep: Keeping Dogs Safe and Comfy This Winter
Between muddy walks, twinkling lights, and cozy nights by the fire, our dogs deserve some holiday TLC, too.
The holidays in Del Ray are full of cheer — sparkling lights, neighborhood strolls, and joyful gatherings with family and friends. But for our dogs, winter can also mean irritated paws, dry skin, and salty sidewalks.
The folks at our sponsor The Muddy Mutt remind us that grooming in colder months isn’t just for looks — it’s about comfort and health. Road salt and ice melt can be harsh on paws, and indoor heat can leave coats itchy and dry. A warm oatmeal bath, a little paw balm, and a quick trim can help keep pups clean, comfy, and photo-ready for all those festive moments.
When walking around the neighborhood, remember that not everyone uses pet-safe de-icers. Wipe your dog’s paws after each walk — especially between the pads — to avoid irritation or accidental ingestion when they lick their paws.
And of course, keep those holiday hazards out of reach: chocolate, tinsel, candles, and even poinsettias can all pose serious risks to curious noses.
A little extra care now means more time to enjoy what really matters — cozy evenings, wagging tails, and holiday treats.
