From the Rocky Mountains to the Ranch

Meet Carl, the self-appointed guardian of the Weems family. That is, of course, until food, walks, or attention present themselves. Carl is a short-haired Border Collie mix who was born in New Mexico then transported, along with his siblings and mother, to Denver, by the Rocky Mountain Puppy Rescue organization (RMPR).

RMPR’s mission is to rescue pregnant dogs, or moms with young litters, from rural areas and relocate them to larger cities to foster them and find them new forever homes. We met Carl at a rescue event while we were in Colorado the Summer of 2023. His puppy photo in front of a green background on the rescue’s website had caught our eyes and meeting him in person at his foster’s home sealed the deal.

The house we were renting did not allow dogs, so we picked Carl up on our last day in Denver for the drive back to his new Texas home. Carl handled the trip like a champ and even spent his first night in a hotel!

Since that first long drive to Fair Oaks Ranch, Carl has traveled with our family to a half dozen states already and has grown from 10 to 45 pounds. He does not like baths, but enjoys chasing lizards, patrolling our back yard, and letting us know if anyone comes to the door. Carl took a Puppy Manners class with MC Linnemann of Deer Meadows and learned many important skills including how to sit, lie down, and stay. We also taught him some fun tricks with the help of a near endless supply of treats! Now he can shake, give high fives, and roll over. If you see Carl out for a walk, say “Hi” and maybe he will perform a trick for you!
