The Unique Talents of Judith Calhon: Calligrapher and Organist

Judith Calhon has found a haven to nurture her artistic and musical passions in Fair Oaks Ranch, where she has lived for three years. Her life is a harmonious blend of art and music, shaped by decades of creativity and her family’s military life. From 1985 to 1998, Judith lived in Boerne, where her husband, a retired Naval Commander and carrier pilot, served as the Priest of St. Helena’s Episcopal Church. Judith herself was the organist and music director, weaving her love for music into the community.
Judith’s journey as a calligrapher began in the late 1950s under the tutelage of Miriam Koller at the Koller Studio in Philadelphia. Her work combines copperplate script with intricate illuminations, often adorned with vine-like designs and 24-karat gold leaf. Using opaque watercolors and Eternal India Ink on fine Arches paper, her creations remain vibrant and unsmudged, showcasing her meticulous attention to detail. Her portfolio includes patriotic themes, religious prayers, awards, and decrees. She also authored an instructional book, A Specialty: Guidelines to Script, highlighting her favorite hand, copperplate script.
As an organist with a Master of Music degree, Judith has performed annual recitals throughout her life. Her dedication to practice ensures each performance resonates deeply with her audience, stirring emotions and touching hearts.
Judith’s artistry reflects her family’s military heritage and faith, blending traditional techniques with personal inspiration. Each piece is thoroughly researched and carefully framed, designed to evoke warm thoughts and appreciation for its intricate beauty. Similarly, her organ recitals are heartfelt expressions of her love for music, aiming to move her listeners.
For Judith, art and music are a way of life. Through her calligraphy and organ performances, she continues to inspire and touch lives, leaving a lasting legacy of artistry and melody in the tranquil setting of Fair Oaks Ranch.
