Rivers Edge Counseling and Wellness

Rivers Edge Staff

I am Katelyn Sullins; my husband Tyler and I met early in our 20's while working at a summer camp in East Texas called Pine Cove. I only knew him as a charming southern boy from seminary who knew how to make people laugh. Fast forward 13 years and we are married with three young kids, still doing our best to live life with those initial laid back summer camp vibes.

We both have backgrounds in ministry and student discipleship and pursued our master's in counseling. Therapy not only fits our innate God-given designs but was a large part of our respective journeys toward maturity.

We both feel compelled to offer access to the full, free life we believe we were intended, the kind Jesus offers his followers in John 10:10. We've found that working as a group, in concert with other experts in the field, and offering excellent holistic care for the mind, body and soul is the pathway to that full, free kind of life.

Counseling can be a mixed bag - and everyone looks for something a little different when seeking out a counselor. We pride ourselves on tailoring the counseling experience to the individual client and are able to work with the whole family system because of our unique specialties. As a practice, we have counselors who specialize in all different ages and stages throughout the family system and collaborate to see the bigger picture.

Generally, when clients seek out counseling services, they are looking for some form of traditional talk therapy. Practicing from a holistic perspective means we might not be your “typical” counselor, as we seek to be well trained in the most recent scientifically researched methods of healing. We offer traditional talk therapy, as well as somatic treatments that aim to heal and restore the body from the “bottom-up” as well as the “top-down” (as traditional talk therapy aims to do). Might we ask about your relationship with your dad when you come into therapy? Sure. But we will aim to look at the whole person, through a faith based, trauma-informed, holistic lens. That means we offer assessments, play therapy, couples work, affair recovery, family of origin story work, EMDR, neurofeedback, Safe and Sound Protocol, Restoration Therapy, as well as traditional therapy catered to each client’s specific needs.

We as a staff are passionate about seeing people experience and live into what Jesus called the “zoe” life. Rivers Edge is aptly named after the place where current meets shore - a decision point, a place where life is found, an often-scary entry point into something new. That’s something we aren’t made to do alone, but alongside one another for the journey. We believe so wholeheartedly in our design as communal people, this shapes the way we practice - in concert with each other, to treat the person, in the whole family system, inside the scope of how we were created - whole, integrated complex beings - not made for isolation. We have three other locations across Texas (Austin, College Station, Houston and Boerne) which allows us to offer connection and help to a broader audience of friends and families of our clients.

Boerne is such a beautiful place to live and raise a family; we feel privileged to call the Hill Country “home” alongside such a wonderful community. There is no shortage of counselors in the area, and we practice from an abundance mindset, knowing we are blessed to be a blessing. A large part of our practice model is collaborating with fellow mental health professionals for the betterment of the whole. Boerne Chamber of Commerce (Kimberly Blohm and all her wonderful staff) have made it easy to get involved in the community as well as connected to various resources around town. Our staff are deeply involved at Hill Country Daily Bread, we often teach and lead classes at local churches in the area and are active in the Hill Country Counselors Association’s efforts to offer accessible care to everyone in the Hill Country, specifically those affected by the recent floods.

We are among some of the first people in the area to offer both Neurofeedback and Safe and Sound Protocol. Practicing using polyvagal theory as it intersects with researched neuroscience means we can actually train your brain and move your nervous system toward a more ventral vagal state. In other words - we can measure your movement from stress to rest, or dysregulation to regulation.

Counseling is often one of the bravest, most sane things people do. We’d be honored to be a part of your journey toward freedom and wellness.
