The Watson Family

We are Watson Family! Josh, Rachel, Mckenna (14) and David (11) as well as our dog Storm (5) and cat Princess Donut (1). Josh grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina. Rachel, who is from Brazil, first travelled to the US as an au pair in 2006. She met Josh shortly after her arrival; Josh had just completed his undergraduate degree at UNC Chapel Hill with a double major in economics and international studies. Rachel originally planned to learn English and then return to Brazil. She and Josh first met at an event for the au pair program at a local baseball game. They began dating, she extended her program for an additional year, and the rest was history.

The family moved to Florida where Josh attended medical school and Mckenna was born. We then moved to Pennsylvania, where David was born. We made our way to Texas in 2016. Neither of us had particular ties to Texas but were drawn to the warm climate and the Texas Hill Country lifestyle. We both love the small town feel you get living in Fair Oaks Ranch and the fact you can be so close to everything we do while still having some space to roam. In addition, the schools here are excellent; both of our children went to preschool in Boerne and have gone through the dual language program with BISD.

Josh works as an Emergency Medicine physician within the Baptist Health System in San Antonio. You will most likely find him at St. Luke's Baptist hospital where he serves as the Medical Director. He also works at a few of the Baptist Neighborhood hospitals, including the locations on Hausman and NW Military.

Rachel wears many hats depending on the day. Outside of managing the kids’ busy schedule or volunteering at Fabra Elementary, she serves as the Large Group coordinator for the elementary age kids at our church, Cibolo Creek Community Church. The church is celebrating 30 years of service this year, and we have attended since moving here in 2016. Beyond that, Rachel also manages a real estate portfolio of short term and long-term rental properties in San Antonio. There is always something going on!

McKenna is very talented and involved with activities both in and out of school. She plays club volleyball with FLOW as well as cheering with the Sapphires at BMSS. Mckenna has a love for all things related to the theater and the arts and has excelled academically, including with UIL where she won in several categories last year.

David is in his last year with the Dual Language program at Fabra elementary and also excels academically. He loves building and understanding how things work. He is active in the chess club as well as the GT program in school. David also enjoys his time at World Karate in Leon Springs.

We have had all kinds of pets in the past including chickens, fish, a rabbit, tortoise, dogs and a cat. Our current furry family members are Storm, a 5yo Weimaraner, and Donut, a 1yo stray cat we adopted. Storm can often be found chasing people in our front yard. Donut, or Princess Donut, is the boss and can be found wandering the yard or on one of the couches or beds in the house.

We like to celebrate different cultures in our house and often have a family member or friend from here or across the world living with us. Both children and Rachel are nearly fluent in Spanish, and both kids are fairly proficient in Portuguese as well. We all love being involved in our community and experiencing the wider world through travel.

Our favorite thing to do as a family is to travel. Whether a road trip or several connecting flights, we never get tired of exploring the world together. We also greatly enjoy being outdoors either camping or hiking. We took the opportunity to explore the many trails and parks that our neighborhood offers during the Covid lockdown. This opened our eyes to the beautiful trail system right in our backyard and helped us to better experience our town. Our favorite place, however, is almost certainly the beach.

We love going to Parker's for ice cream or visiting any of the great restaurants in Boerne. N's Thai and Dodging Duck are some of our favorite go-to lunch spots. Rachel is heavily involved with the children's ministry at Cibolo Creek, and Josh also volunteers there with the Middle School kids. In an area where we receive so many blessings, we both feel that it is important to contribute and give back.

We are very grateful for all the hard work the BISD teachers put in with our kids. Outside of volunteering with our church, Rachel remains involved helping out in the classroom and with other fundraising events. Josh has participated in events such as career day at school and serving in a medical capacity at various local functions.
