JoJo’s Comeback: Swinging for Joy in the Golden Years
From childhood shortstop to senior league outfielder, JoJo is embracing the thrill of the game once more.

Joanne Schaefer, known as JoJo to her friends, is a 63-year-old Franklin resident, retired attorney and teacher who has recently rekindled her passion for softball. Having lived in Franklin for over two decades, JoJo and her family have deep roots in the community. She and her husband, Scott, along with their children, Lauren and James—both Franklin natives—are proud to call it home. Now playing in the Cape Cod Senior Softball League (CCSSL), JoJo has transitioned from her youth position as a shortstop to the outfield, joking, “My legs still work!” JoJo has found camaraderie, friendship, and the joy of running around on sunny days in the Cape—perfectly reflecting her deep connection to the community and neighborhood. Her return to softball came in an unexpected yet delightful way.
Two years ago, while attending a craft fair with a group of Franklin friends, JoJo came across a CCSSL vendor tent. With encouragement from both her friends and the league, she decided to sign up. Looking back, JoJo calls it “the best recent decision she’s made!” From childhood shortstop to senior league outfielder, JoJo is embracing the thrill of the game once more.
Her passion for the game has strengthened her ties to the community and created lasting memories. Among her favorite moments—besides forming lifelong friendships—are her daring diving catches. With approximately 400 men and just eight women in the league, most players opt not to dive, but JoJo jokes, “They are all wiser than I!” Another cherished aspect of her experience is the influence of her father, James, whom she considers the most impactful coach in her life.
Returning to the game has reaffirmed JoJo’s appreciation for the golden years and the joy they bring. She has been inspired by fellow senior players—some still competing at 90 years old— and is especially grateful for the opportunity to play alongside Keith Fluker, an actor known for roles in Shutter Island, The Game Plan, and The Equalizer, as well as his work as a stunt double for Denzel Washington. Stepping back onto the field has been an invaluable lesson— one that continues to inspire both JoJo and those around her.
A lifelong player, she started softball at just four years old and even earned an academic/athletic scholarship to Northwestern University. However, life took her away from the game for nearly four decades. Now, reinvigorated by her return, JoJo shares, “It has brought me a tremendous amount of joy! It is never too late to get back into what you love!”
