Clayton and Brenda Kauffman: A love story rooted in the heart of Hershey
Wedding Day 1961
In the shadow of Hershey’s iconic sweetness, a love story blossomed—one as rich and enduring as the chocolate that made the town famous. Clayton "Bill" Kauffman, a quiet soul born in 1925, and Brenda (Steigenhofer), a vibrant spirit from Steelton, first met on a blind date arranged by fate and family. That single evening sparked a devotion that would span more than six decades, weathering every storm and celebrating every joy together.
Their journey was woven through the fabric of Hershey itself. Bill grew up in the town, graduating from Hershey High and Hershey Junior College and then made his way to the University of Delaware, his life marked by tennis matches and engineering dreams. Brenda brought laughter and energy, her social dynamism perfectly balancing Bill’s gentle reserve. Together, they built a partnership where opposites didn’t just attract, they completed one another, forging a bond that grew stronger with every challenge.
The couple’s love story expanded as they raised three daughters—Carol, Jill, and Jackie—each finding their own path across the country yet always tethered by the powerful sense of family instilled by their parents. Five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren now carry forward the legacy of love and respect that Bill and Brenda modeled every day.
For the Kauffman’s, the secret to a lasting marriage was simple: unwavering love and deep respect. Their daughter Jackie describes them as “amazing,” a testament to their commitment, faith, and determination. No matter the difficulty, they faced it hand in hand, their differences blending harmoniously. Perhaps destiny they now live in a place called “Harmony.”
The roots of their story run deep in Hershey’s history. Bill’s father and grandfather both dedicated their lives to the Hershey Chocolate Factory, and Bill himself became a local legend—one of the earliest “human Zambonis,” cleaning up the ice at Bears’ games before the machine was invented. The couple cherished Hersheypark, where Bill operated rides for thirteen seasons, and some of their favorite spots include Gabriella’s and The Hershey Pantry.
Even as life changed, their love remained constant. In 2025, Bill and Brenda moved to Harmony at Hershey on Canal Street, where they found new joys—happy hours filled with music, lively physical therapy classes, and delicious meals shared with friends. Family visits fill their home with laughter, and every moment is a celebration of the love that has defined their lives. Their apartment, with its view of the Hershey smokestacks, keeps them forever connected to the town where their story began.
