Festival of Lights to Halloween Nights: The Vibrant Traditions of the Verma Family

Navin and Mamta Verma have spent more than two decades quietly shaping the character of our community through their profound dedication, warmth, and shared experiences. Since moving to the Hummelstown and Hershey area in 2003, this dynamic couple has raised a vibrant, accomplished family while serving local residents during their deepest moments of medical need. Over the last 23 years, they have woven themselves into the very fabric of the neighborhood, transforming a strategic career move into a deep, lifelong commitment to the place they call home.
To walk through the neighborhoods of Hershey and Hummelstown is to witness a community built on a foundation of growth, education, and connection. For the Verma family, this pocket of Central Pennsylvania became the canvas where they painted their version of the American Dream—transitioning from the bustling, fast-paced streets of New York City to a welcoming neighborhood where tree-lined lanes and friendly waves are the daily standard.

From New Delhi to New York, and Home to Hershey
The Vermas' journey to our community spans continents. Navin originally grew up in New Delhi, India, before taking a leap of faith to move to the United States. His wife, Mamta, hails from the vibrant region of Punjab, India, embarking on her own journey across the globe after finishing her medical studies.
The two eventually crossed paths and built their early lives together in Queens, New York, navigating the rigorous demands of medical training. But as their careers blossomed and their family began to grow, they sought a place that offered both exceptional professional opportunities and a nurturing environment to raise children.
The turning point came in 2003, when a dual opportunity opened at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Mamta began her demanding residency in Neurology, while Navin joined the faculty within the prestigious Division of Nephrology. What began as a strategic career move quickly transformed into a deep, lifelong love affair with the Hershey and Hummelstown area.
Over the last 23 years, both Navin and Mamta have become pillars of the regional healthcare landscape. Navin continues his vital work as a Nephrologist at Penn State Health, while Mamta serves the wider region as a Neurologist at UPMC. Together, they have committed their lives to healing others, bringing expert care and a comforting bedside manner to thousands of local patients.
A new adventure for Mamta has begun as well, taking a love of healing and expertise to open a medical aesthetics center located on Chocolate Ave: Aesthetics on Chocolate. Mamta and her team opened downtown this summer and look forward to serving the Hershey community with their services.

A New Generation Forged in Hershey
While Navin and Mamta spent their days in clinics and hospital wards, their children were busy making their own marks on the local community. The Verma household has always been fueled by curiosity, ambition, and a deep appreciation for the arts, athletics, and local entertainment.
Their eldest son, Aayush (now 22), grew up navigating the highly rated local school system. Armed with a strong foundation built right here in the neighborhood, Aayush moved back to his parents’ old stomping grounds—New York City—where he currently works in the fast-paced world of finance. Though he now navigates the towering skyscrapers of Manhattan, his roots remain firmly planted in the quiet suburbs of Central Pennsylvania.
Closer to home is Aiyanna (17), who is currently experiencing a milestone year as a senior at Hershey High School. Aiyanna beautifully encapsulates the well-rounded spirit of the youth in our community. She is a dedicated student and involved in many organizations, currently serving as National Honor Society president. When she isn’t in the classroom, Aiyanna can be found channeling her creativity as a talented musician, adding a soundtrack of joy and harmony to the Verma home. Growing up in the Sweetest Place on Earth, both Aayush and Aiyanna have always cherished local traditions, especially spending their summers dancing and singing along to the incredible summer concerts at Hersheypark Stadium.

Bringing a Vision to Life on Elm Avenue
Finding the perfect place to drop anchors is a journey in itself, and for the Vermas, that journey led them to a special property on Elm Avenue. They purchased the home through Ajay Patel with the Hershey Real Estate Group/Coldwell Banker. While the property was in desperate need of a modern update, the location was absolutely perfect for their growing family.
To bring their dream home to life, the Vermas partnered with the expert team at Copenhaver Builders out of Lebanon. The collaboration proved to be an incredible experience; the builders were amazing partners who carefully listened to the family’s every need and want. From stunning custom doors to personalized features throughout the property, the builders executed the vision flawlessly and even completed the entire project ahead of schedule. The stunning transformation didn't go unnoticed—the finished home was proudly featured in the local Parade of Homes and went on to win many prestigious awards, turning a diamond in the rough into a true neighborhood masterpiece.

Celebrating Heritage and Cultivating Community Spirit
While they are deeply rooted in Central Pennsylvania, the Vermas carry their rich Indian heritage proudly, using it as a bridge to build unity, understanding, and celebration across the region.
Navin has dedicated years of service to the Hindu American Religious Institute (HARI), which stands as one of the oldest and most historic Hindu temples in the area. Serving as a board member, Navin was heavily involved in organizing and leading HARI's landmark 50th-anniversary celebration. Driven by a desire to foster mutual respect among neighbors of all backgrounds, Navin proudly represented the temple on the Inter-Religion Faith (IRF) forum. Through his dedicated work with the forum, he has actively participated in community initiatives designed to bring different local religious and cultural groups together in harmony.
Meanwhile, Mamta has channeled her passion for community building into festive celebration. She is the founder and primary organizer of an annual event to celebrate Diwali—the festival of lights—for the Central Pennsylvania Indian and South Asian communities. What started as a way to keep cultural traditions alive has blossomed into a beautiful gathering that illuminates the festive spirit of our region.
When she isn’t organizing large-scale cultural events or caring for patients, Mamta can often be found staying active on the courts. The entire Verma family holds a membership at the Hershey Country Club, where Mamta is learning to play pickleball and enjoying the friendly competition and camaraderie that local sports clubs bring.

The Best of Both Worlds: Blending Traditions
This beautiful fusion of cultures is woven into the very fabric of the Verma home. As a family, they have always joyfully celebrated both Indian and American holidays, ensuring their children grow up with a deep appreciation for the vast, multicultural tapestry of their lives. These festive milestones are never small affairs; the Vermas love to open their hearts and home, gathering with a vibrant network of friends and family who travel from across Central Pennsylvania and various other states to share in the joy. Expressing their love of both cultural traditions allows the Vermas to bring family and friends together in countless ways througout the year.
For Indian holidays, the household transforms into a spectacular display of color, language, and culture. Family members don traditional Indian clothing, and the home is filled with the rich, inviting aromas of authentic Northern Indian cuisine. Mamta loves incorporating these traditional Northern Indian dishes into her home cooking, seeing it as a vital way to ensure her family remains closely rooted to the distinct, comforting flavors of their home country.
This dedication to keeping their cultural identity alive extends to language as well. Both Aayush and Aiyanna speak fluent Hindi, a skill proudly nurtured within the home. Speaking the language allows the younger generation to maintain an unbreakable, personal link to their roots, seamlessly connecting their past heritage with their bright futures in America. The family holds a particularly special place in their hearts for Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights. During this cherished time, they exchange meaningful gifts, share delicious meals, and light up their home with Diyas (lamps), symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and bringing a piece of their ancestral heritage right to the streets of Hershey.

The Sweetest Traditions
Despite their incredibly demanding schedules, the Vermas have always prioritized quality time together, anchoring their lives around shared passions and neighborhood traditions.
Anyone who knows Mamta knows that her care extends straight into the kitchen, where her love for cooking serves as a celebration of family and friendship alike. When the medical coats come off and school vacations allow, the family's absolute favorite collective pastime is traveling. Navin, an avid travel enthusiast, delights in planning excursions that take the family across the globe, exposing them to new cultures, landscapes, and histories.
Yet, for all their global travels, some of the family's absolute favorite memories take place right on their own award-winning front porch. Ever since moving to Elm Avenue, October 31st has become the undisputed highlight of their year. In a town world-famous for chocolate, Halloween on Elm Avenue is nothing short of legendary.
Each year, the family looks forward to welcoming more than 800 trick-or-treaters to their doorstep. For Navin, Mamta, and the kids, sitting out on the porch, handing out candy, and watching the parade of creative costumes is a cherished tradition. It provides a joyful opportunity to connect with hundreds of new families while catching up with familiar faces, perfectly capturing the close-knit, festive spirit that makes living in Hershey so magical.

Rooted in the Neighborhood
Reflecting on more than twenty years in the area, Navin and Mamta are quick to express their gratitude for the place they chose to call home. From supporting local school sports and high school music programs to greeting neighbors during evening walks, the Verma family represents the very best of what makes our community so special.
As Aiyanna prepares to graduate and take her next steps into the world, and as Aayush continues his journey in New York, Navin and Mamta remain dedicated to the patients and neighbors who have embraced them for over two decades. They are a reminder that a neighborhood isn't just a collection of houses—it's a network of families who support, inspire, and care for one another.
The next time you see Navin or Mamta around town, or catch Aiyanna at a high school event, be sure to give them a warm wave. They are more than just brilliant doctors and talented students; they are the neighbors who make Hershey and Hummelstown a wonderful place to live.
