Fostering Fun: How the Joy of Sports Foundation Keeps Hershey’s Youth in the Game

Research shows that 62% of children drop out of organized athletics by age 13, often because playing stops being fun. Right here in Derry Township, the Joy of Sports Foundation (JSF) is changing that narrative by dismantling barriers to entry and redefining youth sports culture.
The organization’s mission began in 2014 when founder Terry Singer recognized a growing gap in community sports. He envisioned a local framework prioritizing enjoyment and accessibility over intense competition. Today, JSF operates as an all-volunteer nonprofit guided by a dedicated executive board. Led by Board Chair Ann Zaprazny, alongside board members Paula Moodie, Don Helms, Katherine (Kat) English, Becky Dugan, and Tom Richards, the foundation works to ensure every local child has the opportunity to be active and stay active. Through community partnerships and direct financial support, this team proves the true value of sports lies in community, development, and pure joy.
Breaking Barriers to Play
Youth sports can quickly become cost-prohibitive for families. Under the guidance of the board, JSF serves as a critical local safety net, offering financial support, micro-grants, and community scholarships to bridge the economic gap.
Community Center Access: The foundation provides funded family scholarships to the Derry Township Community Center, giving residents access to swimming and fitness routines. Since the summer of 2024, 101 families have been offered 1-month or 3-month winter scholarships.
Low-Cost Local Programming: JSF hosts accessible, community-centered activities like Sunday Coed Kickball and Wednesday Coed Volleyball at local venues like Gelder Park, keeping registration fees low and offering scholarships so that any child can join.
Grants and Booster Support: JSF awards micro grants to support youth sports efforts and donates to Hershey High School booster clubs, strengthening teams and programs local kids already love.
League Assistance: By funding local organizations—ranging from Hershey Youth Football to track groups—JSF helps expand programs and ensures that registration costs do not block a child from participating.
Cultivating Leaders and Community
The foundation goes beyond providing equipment; it actively works to improve the culture of local sports. In past years, JSF has partnered with the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) to deliver training workshops to Derry Township coaches, parents, and athletes. These sessions emphasized positive reinforcement, turning youth sports into a healthy environment focused on personal growth. This dedication to character development shines through the annual Joy of Sports Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship. This $1,000 award recognizes graduating senior student-athletes at Hershey High School who demonstrate a profound impact by making themselves, their teammates, and the overall game better. The 2026 Triple-Impact Competitor $1,000 scholarship winners were Carson Hummer, Kylie Mullen, and Jack Zakovitch.
What makes JSF truly exceptional is its structure: it is run entirely by our neighbors. From adult organizers to teen mentors, the Hershey community drives every single initiative. Terry Singer’s original vision continues to thrive under the current board’s stewardship, regularly honoring local volunteers and contributors like league coordinator Chris Painter, a local resident, athlete father, and partner with Advanced Insurance Solutions.
