It's a Beautiful Day
Jane Day

Jane Day is everyone’s grandmother. At 94 years old, Jane is a very friendly, caring woman who puts everyone she meets at ease. At the Church of the Good Shepherd, she makes sure to greet everyone with a hug, no matter their gender, lifestyle, or origins. She immediately puts them at ease, often letting them know she is now their “grandmother.”
Jane never passes a homeless person without stopping and asking how they are doing. She always leaves them with the message that she sees them and that they matter. Jane, a resident of Las Palmas, was born in Southern California, where her mother was Howard Hughes' chief mathematician. When the family moved to Northern California, Jane
became part of the San Francisco social scene. She says the young ladies there would travel to Mission Ranch in Carmel, which was quite the party place. There, she rubbed elbows with movie stars and the cultural elite. It was in Carmel that she met Don Day, who she eventually wed.
For many years, she assisted Don in his electrical business. They had four children, whom they raised in this area. Those children have blessed her with seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She also hosted an exchange student from Germany who still calls her mom weekly.
Jane has been very active in her community.
She started by volunteering in her children’s schools in Pacific Grove, eventually being elected to the school board there. While on that school board, she hired this author straight out of college to be their school psychologist/special education director. Jane also served on the County Board of Education. Beyond her terms on boards of education, she was on the initial Community Human Services Board, the county grand jury, Leadership Monterey, Volunteers
in Action, the mental health board, and others. She was a natural as a volunteer at the information desk at the aquarium.
Jane is well known for taking time to visit people in the memory care senior center weekly and helps serve meals to the homeless by baking homemade cookies every week.
Her love of life goes beyond her volunteer activities.
Jane still loves to travel, and has enjoyed many trips via motor home to the National Parks throughout the US. She enjoys working in her garden, sewing and quilting. Jane's biggest pleasure is in meeting and developing friendships with people, young and old. She is a proud Chi Omega alumni from her college days. And she revels in wearing holiday festive clothing for each celebratory season.
The two biggest tragedies in her life were the loss of her dear husband and the loss of her beloved daughter, but she keeps those memories of love alive in her heart.
If you perchance have the opportunity to meet Jane. Get ready to gain a new grandmother!
