A Cultural Journey to Cuba: Music, Ministry, and Meaningful Moments

This past spring, a small group of Dallas-area Lake Highlands Estates residents including Lake Highlands Estates neighbor Bruce Dunai embarked on a meaningful seven-day adventure to Cuba. Among them was a local traveler who joined a dozen friends for a journey that combined cultural immersion, community outreach, and unforgettable exploration. Despite any preconceived notions about travel to Cuba, it's highly recommended, if the opportunity arises.
The group stayed at the very nice Melia Hotel in Havana, a comfortable and well-located hub for their daily excursions. From there, they traveled by private bus to various locations around the northern shore of the island, including local churches and neighborhoods where they conducted Vacation Bible Schools (VBS) and took part in ministry work.

“It was eye-opening and humbling,” they shared. “We saw firsthand how the average Cuban citizen navigates life amidst shortages and rationing—limited access to food, gasoline, and even basic supplies. Yet, despite these hardships, the Cuban people were some of the most friendly, warm, and welcoming individuals I’ve ever met.”

Transportation itself was a cultural experience. With no public transit system, Cubans rely on hitch-hiking, bicycles, scooters, tuk-tuks, horse-drawn carts, and even 1950s-era cars that remain in use from before the embargo.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the trip was time spent with local children. “They were full of life—healthy, happy, and eager to gather, sing, and spend time with us. Their energy was contagious.”

Dining in Cuba brought its own set of stories. While the hotel's breakfast buffet was sometimes limited due to supply issues, the group found two standout spots for local cuisine: El Aljibe, known for its traditional Cuban fare, and Los Nardos, a Spanish-inspired upscale restaurant near Havana’s city center. A charming gelato shop also became a repeat favorite during the week.

The trip was arranged through WLink.org, an organization that handled the itinerary, transportation, and connections with local churches. The structured planning allowed the group to fully immerse themselves in the culture and ministry without worrying about logistics.
Reflecting on the experience, the traveler shared: “Growing up spending some years in Fort Lauderdale near Miami, I was always fascinated by Cuban culture, but I never imagined I’d actually be able to visit Cuba some day. This trip was truly unforgettable.”  We departed just before the next hurricane spun through the Carribean.

And the adventures don’t stop there. This summer, they’ll be traveling across five European countries in just 12 days as a guest musician with the nationally known Mollie B Band (MollieB.com). Stops will include Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic—each promising new stories and melodies to carry home.

For those considering a similar journey to Cuba, their advice is simple: Go with an open heart and mind. Be ready to be moved, inspired, and changed.
