Leigh Sendra — Family, Community, and Caring for Pets
Founder of CHEW Animal Hospital and devoted Lakewood mom, Leigh Sendra is building a community where every pet—and every family—feels right at home.
May is National Pet Month, and there’s no better neighbor to spotlight than Leigh Sendra—longtime Lakewood resident, devoted mom, and founder of CHEW Animal Hospital, a mission-driven veterinary practice that’s become a lifeline for pet owners across DFW and beyond.
Originally from Lincoln, Nebraska, Leigh graduated from TCU and spent a few early career years in Georgia before moving to Dallas in 2000. “My sister and brother were already here, and I just wanted to be closer to family,” she says. “Now, I’m lucky to live within walking distance of both of them.”
Leigh and her husband, Stace—who works with GlobalMex Financial—have a beautiful family. Her stepchildren include Sofia (married to Luke), Olivia, and Alex, who’s finishing his senior year at the University of Arkansas. Their daughters, Julia and Emma, attend Bishop Lynch and St. John’s, respectively. Life is wonderfully full, with busy school schedules, tennis matches, art projects, and a whole lot of cousin time.
Family plays a huge role in Leigh’s life, but so does her passion for animals. As the founder of CHEW Animal Hospital, Leigh has created more than just a veterinary clinic—she’s built a compassionate, community-first space where pets and their people feel truly cared for. “CHEW started from the belief that every pet deserves access to quality care,” she says. “We work hard to make that a reality, especially for families facing financial barriers.”
CHEW’s mission naturally aligns with National Pet Month, a time to celebrate the joy pets bring and the importance of caring for them. Leigh’s passion also extends beyond her clinic—she’s the founder of Doodle Rock Rescue, and support other local efforts that prioritize animal welfare.
At home, Leigh and Stace enjoy walks around the neighborhood, grabbing coffee on a sunny patio, or spending time at the Arboretum. Their daughters keep them on their toes—Emma is active in tennis and theater classes at East Dallas Arts (founded by Leigh’s sister), while Julia is an incredibly talented visual artist. “Her creativity blows me away—it’s something that definitely runs in her dad’s side of the family,” Leigh says.
Living in a friendly cul-de-sac adds another layer of community to their day-to-day life. “During COVID, all the neighbors bought matching collapsible rocking chairs. We sat outside—six feet apart—and kept each other company. It turned a hard time into something comforting and even fun.”
Their favorite part of living in Lakewood? “The people, the family connections, the lake—it’s everything,” Leigh says. “We’re surrounded by people we love, and that makes even the busiest days feel grounded.”
Advice to New Families in the Neighborhood? “Get outside. Go to White Rock Lake. Take your dog, your kids, your neighbors—just enjoy it. This is a great place to live.”
