29 Years of Impact: Katie McMahon’s Passion for Teaching

For 29 years, Katie McMahon has been a dedicated and inspiring educator at Lakewood Elementary—spending her entire career teaching third grade. Her classroom is a place where students feel encouraged to take risks, learn from mistakes, and support one another through mutual respect and creativity.

What do you love most about teaching? Nothing beats watching students have an ‘aha’ moment! I love seeing them get lost in a novel, sharing laughter, and experiencing the excitement of learning together. Every day is a fresh start, and working with my teammates and the Lakewood community makes it even more special.

Do you have a role model or teaching mantra? I admire anyone who fosters a love of learning, empathy, and creativity. I believe every student has a voice that deserves to be heard, and I strive to create a space where they feel valued and encouraged.

What has been a special part of your journey at Lakewood? Having my own children, Zoe and Sam, attend Lakewood while I was teaching there was truly incredible. Experiencing school together in that way made our bond even stronger and deepened my love for this community. Now, I even have the joy of co-teaching with a former student Liz Ward (Halasz) and teaching the children of former students, which is such a full-circle moment!

What do you enjoy outside the classroom? I love spending time outdoors with my husband, Dave, and our kids—whether it’s walking, paddleboarding, reading, or traveling.

Where might we find you around town? You’ll likely spot me at local East Dallas restaurants, White Rock Lake, or the Arboretum.

After nearly three decades, Katie’s passion for teaching remains as strong as ever. Thank you, Katie, for your dedication to Lakewood Elementary and the generations of students you’ve inspired!
