From 'Ride-Runs' to 4th of July Parties: Get to Know the Larkins!

If you’ve ever walked through the tree-lined streets of Lakewood, you’ve likely encountered the Larkin family, probably on one of their "ride-runs" —a friendly, down-to-earth couple who, along with their young daughter Stella and rescue dog Henry, have become beloved members of the community. For reference, their "ride-runs" are where one parent pushes their daughter, Stella, in the jogging stroller while the other bikes alongside.

Ben Larkin, an Assistant Vice President for Marketing, and Emily Larkin, an Interior Designer and Owner of EJ Interiors, moved to Lakewood in 2018 from Hollywood Heights. After falling in love with the charm of the area and the spacious homes, they settled into their Westlake Street and haven’t looked back.

"We adore the original architecture in Lakewood," says Emily. "The way people here care for their homes is incredible. It’s inspiring to walk around the neighborhood and draw design inspiration from the beautiful homes." The couple’s admiration for the neighborhood extends beyond the homes to the community itself. "The people here are so friendly and supportive. We always feel welcome, whether we’re walking through the neighborhood or enjoying a local event."

While they may come from different backgrounds—Emily from Dallas and Ben from Arlington—the two share a love of family, fun, and community. The Larkins enjoy a range of activities as a family, and their traditions are a testament to their strong sense of togetherness. Each year, they host a big swim party and cookout for family and friends on the 4th of July, after attending the Lakewood Parade. "It's one of our favorite traditions," says Ben.

Their 2.5-year-old daughter, Stella, is already making memories of her own. "Stella’s favorite activities are going to playdates, visiting the Lakewood Library for storytime, and hitting the splash pad with other toddlers in the neighborhood," says Emily. "She’s about to start ballet at Creation Station Dance, which we’re excited about!"

The Larkins are also an active family. Ben is an avid runner and biker and enjoys trips around White Rock Lake. "There’s nothing better than a day spent outdoors getting exercise with the family," he says. Emily, a self-professed treasure hunter, loves visiting antique shops and traveling with her family. "The beach is always my go-to destination, but I also love to visit unique places with Ben and Stella."

Emily is passionate about giving back to the community. She volunteers with Genesis Women's Shelter and Dwell with Dignity, an interior design nonprofit that helps families overcome homelessness. "Volunteering at Genesis during Christmas time is especially meaningful for me," says Emily. "It’s wonderful to donate and wrap gifts for the mothers and their children."

Ben also gives his time, mentoring fourth graders at Academy Four. "I find it so rewarding to help kids develop skills they need to succeed," he explains.

As a family, the Larkins love exploring their neighborhood. "We spend a lot of time walking around and discovering new homes," Emily says. "Lakewood is so unique in how it preserves its history, and it’s a place where you can always find something new."

Their advice for newcomers to Lakewood? "If you have kids, definitely join the Lakewood Early Childhood PTA (LECPTA)," Emily suggests. "It was a great way for me to connect with other moms and become more involved in the community." And for anyone interested in giving back, Emily highly recommends volunteering with the Lakewood Home Tour. "It’s an excellent way to meet people and support local schools," she adds.

The Larkins’ family favorites reveal a mix of local delights and global adventures. They love dining at Olivella’s and Meso Maya, enjoying family outings at Smoky Rose, and cheering on the Texas Longhorns during football season. Their favorite family vacation destinations? Lake Como, Italy, and Kennebunkport, Maine. When it comes to local day trips, the Fort Worth Stockyards is always a hit.

If you get a chance to meet the Larkins out in Lakewood at one of their favorite spots or maybe during one of their "ride-runs," take the opportunity to get to know them—you’re sure to love them. And who knows, you might just be lucky enough to get an invite to their legendary 4th of July swim party!
