Jack of All Trades: Pointer, Percher & Professional Rabbit Spotter
Hi! I’m Jack, a 6-year-old Wirehaired Pointer/Yellow Lab mix, and if I had to describe myself in three words, I’d go with intelligent, confident and sensitive. A well-rounded guy, if I do say so myself.
First, let’s address the obvious: the goatee. I got the best of both of my breeds, which gave me a pretty unique look that people apparently can’t resist. Everywhere I go, people stop my family to ask what kind of dog I am. I don’t mind. In fact, I love the attention. I usually greet everyone with a huge smile and a wagging tail.
My ideal day starts with my family and ends with my family because, as far as I’m concerned, I am a non-negotiable part of every plan. One of my favorite outings is an early evening walk around Luther Burbank Park, where I can put my pointer instincts to work. I search. I spot. I point. And if there’s a rabbit nearby? I WILL find it.
Back at home, I have a few routines that my humans find entertaining. I like to perch on top of the couch cushions like a cat, but getting comfortable is a process. First, I kick the cushions around. Then I spin in circles. Then, once everything is exactly where I want it, I settle in.
I’m also the household dinner supervisor. When someone is cooking, I stand tall on my hind legs, brace my front paws on the counter and watch closely to make sure everything is being prepared correctly. You never know when a quality-control taste test might be required.
Speaking of food, my favorite treat is Costco chicken jerky. My favorite toy is a Chuckit! soft Frisbee — any size will do, but if it squeaks, even better.
At the end of the day, I’m a pretty simple guy. Give me my people, a walk around the Island, a rabbit to point at, a squeaky Frisbee and maybe a piece of chicken jerky, and I’m happy.
Oh, and if you see me around town and wonder what kind of dog I am, go ahead and ask. I’m used to it.
And if you haven’t gotten enough of me yet, I have my own Instagram page, too! You can follow along with my adventures at @jackthepointerlab. I’ll see you over there!
