Shreya Karthik Wins the Superintendent's Scholarship Award for Excellence

With an unwavering dedication to academic excellence and a passion for service, Shreya Karthik has been selected as Henry M. Jackson High School’s recipient of the Everett Public Schools Foundation’s Superintendent’s Scholarship Award for Excellence. Sponsored by Drs. Gary and Sue Cohn, this prestigious $1,000 scholarship honors the top graduating scholar from each high school, selected from the top five percent of students by GPA or pre-college test scores.
Shreya stands out not only for her stellar academic record—maintaining a 4.0 GPA while completing 14 AP courses—but also as a National Merit Finalist. Her accomplishments are matched by a deep and personal vision for the future: to become a physician and clinical researcher committed to equity in healthcare. “I find fulfillment in helping others,” she writes in her application. “So as an aspiring physician, post-high school I envision growing my compassion and medical knowledge to advocate for equitable healthcare.” Her commitment to medicine is grounded in both research and human connection. She hopes to develop better treatments for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through neurobehavioral research that embraces the diversity of the spectrum and challenges harmful stereotypes.
Shreya’s experiences volunteering at Providence Hospital—a facility serving underserved communities—have opened her eyes to the healthcare disparities that affect so many. She is determined to bridge these gaps and provide accessible care to non-English speakers, rural populations, and the financially disadvantaged. “Ultimately,” she explains, “I aspire to be a clinical researcher and a physician who not only treats illnesses but treats people.”
A scholar, artist, and leader, Shreya’s accomplishments extend well beyond academics. She has conducted groundbreaking scientific research, created award-winning editorial cartoons, and leads as president of the speech and debate team. She's also an active member of HOSA and the Chess Club, where her collaborative nature uplifts those around her.
Next fall, Shreya will continue her journey at Brown University through the prestigious Program in Liberal Medical Education—a direct path to Brown’s medical school. With her empathy, intellect, and relentless drive, Shreya is poised to make a profound impact—not only in healthcare, but in the lives of those she serves.
This marks the 38th year of the Superintendent’s Scholarship Award for Excellence. Since 1987, the Everett Public Schools Foundation has recognized outstanding scholarship and inspirational teaching through this program. Each high school selects three finalists from their top-performing seniors, who are then interviewed by a panel of community members. As part of the process, finalists choose a staff member who significantly impacted their learning journey and create a tribute video in their honor—set to be released in mid-May.
