Bowling Into the Spotlight
What started as a last-minute decision turned into a standout freshman season for Jackson’s Allyssa Beachy. With little experience and just weeks to compete, she rolled her way all the way to the 4A State Tournament.
Freshman Allyssa Beachy didn’t set out to become a competitive bowler. In fact, her introduction to the sport came unexpectedly while scrolling through photos of Jackson High School’s athletic teams. When she noticed the bowling team, she was surprised it even existed. To her, bowling had always been something fun and casual, not something played at a competitive level. Still, the idea of trying something new and being part of a team felt like an opportunity worth exploring.
Originally, Allyssa planned to join with friends, but the start of the season came and went before she realized it. By the time a friend reminded her, there was only about a month left. Even so, her coaches welcomed her in, giving her the chance to jump into a brand-new experience. What could have been a missed opportunity instead became a memorable and meaningful first season and a great introduction to sports at Jackson High School.
One of Allyssa’s favorite memories came during an away match against the senior bowlers. Even though Jackson only had four bowlers that day, she remembers the experience as both fun and important. It was her first away match, and it helped her become more comfortable with her mark and her throw. Moments like that gave her confidence and helped her settle into the rhythm of competition.
While matches were exciting, much of what Allyssa loved most happened during after-school practices. Although they required giving up time at home, she found them to be a chance to relax and unwind after the school day. Practices gave her the opportunity to improve her skills while also enjoying time with teammates. Some of her favorite parts of the season came not just during matches, but after them, when the team spent time together building friendships and sharing laughs. That sense of connection made the experience especially meaningful.
As a new bowler, Allyssa quickly learned that the sport is as much mental as it is physical. One of the most surprising lessons was that overthinking could actually hurt her performance. The more she focused on every small detail of her approach or release, the harder it became to execute. Learning to relax, trust herself, and simply enjoy the game made a noticeable difference.
Despite joining late and having limited experience, Allyssa achieved something she never expected: qualifying for the 4A State Tournament. She describes it as a dream she didn’t even know she had. While she didn’t place at state, the experience itself was exciting and rewarding, especially in her first season. By the end of the tournament, she found herself focusing less on results and more on simply enjoying the moment. It was an experience that left her both grateful and motivated for what lies ahead.
Bowling also taught Allyssa valuable lessons beyond the lanes. Balancing practices and schoolwork helped her strengthen her time-management skills, while the positive atmosphere of matches, filled with cheers and encouragement, reinforced the importance of good sportsmanship. In the classroom she enjoys math the most, appreciating the focus and problem-solving it requires. Outside of bowling, Allyssa enjoys staying active and has an interest in a variety of sports, including basketball. Her willingness to try something new is part of what made this first season such a success, both on and off the lanes.
Throughout the season, Allyssa says both her coaches and her parents played an important role in supporting her. She is especially grateful that her coaches welcomed her so late and helped her quickly learn the sport, while her parents encouraged her to pursue something she had chosen on a whim. Looking ahead, Allyssa’s goals are simple. Whether it’s bowling or another sport, she wants to continue playing for the enjoyment of it. She understands how easy it can be for competition to take away from the fun, and she hopes to always keep that balance. After an exciting first season that included a trip to state, she is looking forward to what comes next in her journey at Jackson High School.
Jackson bowling coach Ross says Allyssa quickly became an important part of the team despite joining late in the season. She describes her attitude and enthusiasm as infectious, bringing a positive energy to those around her. “Allyssa is a quiet true leader by always showing positivity,” she said. Her hard work paid off when she earned a spot representing Jackson at the 4A State Tournament, an impressive accomplishment for a freshman and one of only six ninth-grade bowlers to qualify.
