Lucas is Making His Mark on the Court!
At 15 years old, Lucas Atkins, a sophomore at Archbishop Murphy High School, is already carving out his place on the court through dedication, growth, and a strong sense of team. Lucas plays on both the junior varsity and varsity basketball teams for Archbishop Murphy, while also competing in AAU basketball with Wildcat Basketball Academy. Though he started playing recreationally at a young age, it wasn’t until seventh grade, when he joined AAU, that he began to take the sport seriously. Since then, his commitment to improving his game has been clear.
A point guard and shooting guard, Lucas embraces different roles depending on the level of play. On the JV team he serves as the primary ball handler and leader on the court. At the varsity level his responsibilities shift, where he contributes as a role player with a focus on defense. This ability to adapt has helped him grow as both a player and teammate.
Some of Lucas’s favorite moments in basketball reflect both personal achievement and team experience. He recalls hitting a game-winning shot during AAU season and a standout performance for Archbishop Murphy, where he recorded a career high 33-point double-double with 12 rebounds. Off the court, being named Most Valuable Player for the JV team and earning his letter at the team banquet were also meaningful milestones. Still, for Lucas, it’s often the smaller moments that matter most, like bus rides with teammates and sharing meals after games.
The demands of a busy basketball season require discipline and focus. With daily practices, including Saturdays, and two to three games each week, Lucas stays grounded by keeping his academics a priority. He understands that maintaining his grades is essential to being able to compete, and his coaches reinforce that expectation. Motivation comes from a strong sense of accountability to his team. Lucas pushes himself because he doesn’t want to let his teammates down and is driven by a desire to keep improving. Along the way, he has learned valuable lessons from older teammates, including the importance of not taking these years for granted and maintaining composure, knowing there is still time to grow.
Support has played a key role in his journey. Lucas credits his dad as his biggest influence, someone who consistently supports him and helps him through challenges. He has also benefited from guidance across multiple levels of basketball. His AAU coach, Coach Naode, has helped him improve both as a player and emotionally, while program director Coach Joe has provided advice and prioritized his development. At Archbishop Murphy, Coach Hardy and Coach Doug have emphasized emotional control and skill development. Together, these influences have helped shape Lucas not just as an athlete, but as a person.
Lucas also values the opportunity to give back. Each year Archbishop Murphy hosts a youth basketball camp for grades one through eight, where players volunteer as coaches. For Lucas, working with younger athletes is both enjoyable and meaningful, as he helps them develop their skills while setting an example. Looking ahead, Lucas has set goals for both the near and long term. He hopes to help his team reach the state level and compete strongly within their conference. For now, his focus remains on continuing to grow throughout his high school career.
Off the court, Lucas enjoys spending time with friends, having fun, and watching basketball. He draws inspiration from players like Johnny Juzang, whose March Madness performance showed him that anything is possible, and Donovan Dent, a player he looks up to and models his game after.
Whether it’s stepping into a leadership role on JV, contributing on varsity, or putting in the work behind the scenes, Lucas Atkins continues to build his game with purpose, supported by those around him and motivated by what lies ahead.
