Finding Her Rhythm
Hannah Ostrom’s journey through dance and dedication...
For Hannah Ostrom, a senior at Henry M. Jackson High School, dance has been a constant presence for as long as she can remember. What began when she was just three years old has grown into a central part of her life, shaping not only her talent as a performer but also her discipline, confidence, and sense of purpose. Hannah lives in Mill Creek with her parents, Melissa and Isaac, her younger brother Zack, and their cat, Joey. Her family has been a steady source of support throughout her journey, showing up for competitions, recitals, and performances over the years.
Outside of school, Hannah's schedule is full. She works two jobs; one at a fitness center in Bothell and another at a sports park in Mill Creek. She also trains at two dance studios, Turning Pointe Dance Centre in Snohomish and Westlake Dance Center in Seattle, and is a member of the advanced 18+ dance company Rhythms at Dance Elite in Lynnwood. When she is not working, dancing, or focused on school, she enjoys spending time with friends and family.
Academically, Hannah has taken on a demanding course load that includes Running Start, AP classes, and College in the High School programs. Through these opportunities, she is close to earning her associate degree while still in high school. She describes the experience as both rewarding and challenging, requiring her to learn how to manage stress and stay committed through busy seasons. Alongside her academics, she has been deeply involved in leadership. She serves as co-president of Link Crew, is a third-year member of National Honor Society, and participates in Spirit Club. Through these roles, she has helped lead projects such as the school’s Lip Dub, food drives, and freshman orientation activities, while also supporting school events and athletics.
Dance, however, remains at the center of it all. Hannah grew up training in a wide range of styles including ballet, pointe, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, ballroom, and tap. While she developed versatility across many disciplines, she has found a strong connection to hip hop and contemporary, where she feels the most freedom in movement and expression. Her path took a significant turn when she auditioned for the Seattle Storm Dance Troupe. Encouraged by her parents and teachers, she approached the audition as a learning experience, entering without expectations. At just 15 years old, she earned a spot on the team, an experience she describes as life-changing. Performing at that level introduced her to new challenges and opportunities, including learning from choreographers with professional experience and performing in front of thousands of people.
Through her time with the Storm Dance Troupe, Hannah developed valuable skills that extended far beyond dance. She learned how to remain composed under pressure, often performing routines shortly after learning them, and strengthened her ability to quickly retain choreography. She also gained experience in communication, teamwork, and time management while balancing rehearsals, games, and school responsibilities. Most importantly, she built lasting friendships and memories.
For Hannah, performing offers something unique. It is a space where she can fully focus and be present. Whether dancing or singing, being on stage allows her to set aside outside stress and immerse herself completely in the moment. Several performances stand out in her journey. After years of competing, she chose her sophomore year as her final season on a competition team, making her last solo performance especially meaningful. Another moment that stands out was singing the national anthem at a sold-out Seattle Storm game at Climate Pledge Arena. Standing alone in front of thousands of people was both nerve-wracking and rewarding, and it remains a defining experience.
Balancing everything requires strong time management. Between rehearsals, performances, schoolwork, and jobs, Hannah has learned to stay organized and focused. Her commitment to growth has also shaped her mindset. Through both successes and challenges, she has learned that consistency and a strong work ethic are essential, and that setbacks are part of the process.
Throughout her journey, Hannah credits her dance teachers, teammates, and family as key influences. Their support and guidance have helped her grow both personally and professionally, and she remains connected with many of the mentors who have shaped her path.
As she looks ahead, Hannah plans to attend Western Washington University where she intends to major in business while continuing to keep dance in her life. While she does not yet know exactly what that will look like, she is excited for new opportunities, new connections, and the chance to continue growing. For younger dancers, her advice is simple: Step outside your comfort zone and explore new opportunities. Growth, she believes, comes from embracing challenges and staying open to new experiences.
Through it all, it is the art of dance itself that continues to motivate her. Even during the busiest or most challenging times, it remains the place where she can focus, improve, and continue working toward becoming the best version of herself.
