More Than a Storefront

After nearly two decades in Mill Creek Town Center, Kate Matar and Mike Jones are closing the doors on the businesses they built together, marking the end of a meaningful chapter for both their family and the community they’ve served.

Mike, a pharmacist and owner of NorthWest Pharmaceutical Compounding, Inc., and Kate, owner and buyer of Kate’s Gifts, created a unique shared space where both businesses thrived side by side. Having lived in the Mill Creek area for around 20 years, the couple built something deeply rooted in the community they came to love.

Kate and Mike’s business story is deeply intertwined with their life as a couple. Married for many years, their partnership extended naturally into their work, with each bringing their own strengths to the shared space they created. As a longtime pharmacist, Mike specialized in compounding, preparing customized medications tailored to individual patient needs, while Kate focused on building a retail experience that felt personal and welcoming. Their ability to support one another behind the scenes made it possible for both businesses to grow side by side. Kate often reflects that without Mike’s steady foundation in the pharmacy, bringing her vision for the gift store to life may not have been possible. At its core, their success has always been rooted in teamwork, trust, and a shared commitment to serving their community.

Their journey began with the pharmacy at the north end of the Town Center, where they spent five years before expanding. When the opportunity arose in 2015 to move into the former Belle Provence space, they knew it was the right fit. That move allowed them to bring Kate’s vision for a gift store to life alongside the pharmacy, creating a warm and inviting destination in the heart of Mill Creek.

From the beginning, Kate’s Gifts was intentionally designed to feel different. Inspired by the wood furnishings she sourced early on, Kate wanted the space to feel like stepping into someone’s home rather than into a traditional retail store. That vision guided everything, from the carefully curated merchandise to the creative displays that evolved over time. The shop became known for its cohesive, welcoming feel and a wide variety of items that offered something for everyone, all while remaining thoughtfully priced for customers.

Over the years, certain items became customer favorites. Jellycat Plush quickly grew into a standout, with demand so high that customers would call regularly to check availability. Seasonal items like Christmas gnomes were also a huge success, with hundreds sold each year. Jewelry, candles, kitchen towels, and bath and body items remained consistent staples, while even hand sanitizer became a surprising bestseller during the pandemic. Beyond the products, it was the experience that set Kate’s Gifts apart. From day one, the couple prioritized customer care, offering complimentary gift wrapping to create a true one stop shop. Even when the cost made it tempting to reconsider, they chose to continue the service because of how much it meant to their customers.

Relationships became the heart of the business. Over time, many customers turned into familiar faces and lasting friendships. Whether helping someone find the perfect gift, creating custom gift baskets, or shipping items to loved ones, Kate and Mike found joy in making people’s lives a little easier and more meaningful. Looking back, they are most proud of building something entirely their own. Starting a business from scratch is no small task, and they take pride in creating a place where customers felt welcomed and valued. They also reflect on the team they built along the way, providing a positive work environment and long term opportunities for employees, many of whom stayed for years.

Kate was especially grateful for the team that helped bring her vision to life each day. She placed a strong emphasis on customer care, and her staff consistently reflected that standard, greeting every guest with a warm welcome and attentive service. Creating a positive, inviting experience was always a priority, and it showed in the way customers were treated from the moment they walked through the door. Her team also took great pride in maintaining the store’s appearance, ensuring it was always clean, thoughtfully arranged, and visually beautiful.

As Mill Creek Town Center has changed over time, with fewer retail shops and more service-based businesses, Kate and Mike have remained a consistent presence. Through community events like the Wine Walk, Art Walk, Treats on Main, and holiday celebrations, they stayed connected to the people around them and embraced the spirit of the Town Center. Their decision to retire comes as their lease reaches its end and they look ahead to a new season of life. The transition has been bittersweet. While they are excited for more time together, opportunities to travel, and space to enjoy hobbies and family, saying goodbye to their customers, staff, and daily interactions has been emotional.

What they want the community to know is simple, thank you. The support, friendships, and shared moments over the years made their dream possible. As they step into retirement, they look forward to slowing down, visiting family across the country, and exploring new destinations, including Europe and Asia. After years of dedication to their business, they are ready to embrace this next chapter together. Still, what they will miss most is the people. The connections they’ve built with customers, employees, and the community will remain the most meaningful part of their journey.
