An act of generosity has a way of growing, creating a ripple effect that reveals the kindest part of humanity. Jeffrey Ahia was in desperate need of help. He had been battling health complications for years, enduring dialysis due to kidney failure and facing one setback after another. As he began to lose hope, he turned to social media to share his story and find a kidney donor. He posted a simple video, not knowing who might see it or where it might lead. Renee Farr came across the video on a Mill Creek Community page and was immediately moved. She felt a calling to do what she could to help. What began with a stranger reaching out to another would bring Jeffrey and Renee together in a way that went far beyond a medical procedure.
In 2025, Jeffrey faced multiple health complications that brought him in and out of the hospital. As his health deteriorated, he found himself in an increasingly desperate situation. He needed a way to tell others about his story and his urgent need for a new kidney. He decided to make a short video using flash cards to tell his story and posted it online. To his surprise, the video received more than 280,000 views. The response was overwhelming, with thousands of people leaving encouraging comments and sharing his post. Of those who saw it, 11 people felt particularly moved and chose to get tested to see if they could be a match. Renee was one of them. She didn’t know Jeffrey or know if she could help, but she knew she wanted to.
Renee was no stranger to the idea of organ donation. She had the opportunity to donate her late husband’s organs after his passing and witnessed firsthand the impact that such a gift could have. More recently, her sister-in-law had become ill and was in need of a kidney. Renee wanted to help and offered to get tested, but tragically, her sister-in-law passed away before any testing could take place. When Renee came across Jeffrey’s post, it felt like an opportunity to act on something she had already carried with her for years. She remembers being “so captivated” by the video. “I just felt this pull that spoke to my heart,” she said. She reached out to Jeffrey and told him she would get tested. Then came the wait. When the results came back, Renee was a perfect match. After nearly losing hope, Jeffrey saw the news as a miracle.
When Jeffrey and Renee met, they quickly discovered they had a lot in common. Living close by, with Renee in Mill Creek and Jeffrey in Mountlake Terrace, they found themselves bonding over shared interests like crafts and musicals. For Jeffrey, the connection felt like something he had always longed for. “I had always wanted to have a sister,” he said. “I feel like this was my gift. I finally got the sister I always wanted.” As their friendship grew, they became sources of support for one another as they navigated the uncertainty leading up to the surgery. Several health complications and setbacks caused delays, but they continued to lean on each other as they waited for the day they would finally undergo the procedure.
Finally, on June 9th, the wait was over. The surgery went perfectly. Within minutes of the transplant, the kidney began working in Jeffrey’s body. He woke the next morning feeling like he was “back to how I was 20 years ago,” and his family immediately noticed the difference. “I couldn’t have asked for it to have gone any better,” he said. Renee’s recovery was just as smooth, and within a few weeks, she had regained her energy. But beyond the physical recovery, Renee was left with a feeling she hadn’t expected: “Overflowing joy. I had no idea, from saying yes, the joy I would get out of this.”
By the time the surgery arrived, Renee was no longer giving a kidney to a stranger. Jeffrey had become her friend, and she had become someone he could count on. After years of dialysis and declining health had begun to erode his hope for a better future, the transplant gave Jeffrey a renewed sense of hope. His friendship with Renee gave him someone to share that new chapter with. Today, Jeffrey and Renee are working together to raise awareness about living organ donation, partnering with national organizations and sharing their experience with others. They approach the work not simply as donor and recipient, but as friends who want to share what they have learned from their experience.
A simple act of generosity became something neither Renee nor Jeffrey could have anticipated. A decision made in response to a stranger’s plea led to a new life, a lasting friendship, and a shared purpose. What began with one person reaching out to another continues to ripple outward, carried forward by the friendship they built together.
