One Stop Shop - Lou's Chicken

Rich & Kate

Tucked into the Rheem side of Moraga, Lou’s Chicken Shop is a neighborhood eatery and family-driven business. Behind the counter are Richard and Kate, a husband-and-wife team whose story spans continents and cultures, now firmly grounded in the Lamorinda area.
Richard, who grew up in Palo Alto, and Kate, originally from Bangkok, Thailand, bring a blend of experiences that shape both their family life and their approach to business. Together with their two children - Kayla (10) and Steven (5) - they’ve created not just a restaurant, but a local gathering place.
Their journey in Moraga began in 2018 with Noodle Theory, a concept that quickly became a local favorite. After four successful years, they reimagined their vision and opened Lou’s Chicken Shop in 2022. The transition reflects both their adaptability and their commitment to serving food that resonates with the community.
Education played an important role in shaping their paths. Richard attended UC Davis, where he majored in Asian American Studies, while Kate earned a degree in Business Management from Bangkok University. Their combined backgrounds, cultural insight, and business acumen are evident in the thoughtful way they run their restaurant.
Like many great partnerships, their story began simply: Richard and Kate met through mutual friends. Today, that connection has grown into a strong family unit and a thriving small business.
At home, their lives are just as full. Kayla is active in gymnastics and plays on the Clippers FC soccer team, balancing athletic dedication with school and family time. Steven, at five years old, is enjoying the early years of childhood, growing up surrounded by the rhythms of both family life and the restaurant world.
When they’re not working, the family enjoys spending time together in the community they now call home. Moraga Commons Park is a favorite destination, offering space to relax and recharge, while trips to the local movie theater provide simple, cherished moments together. Holidays and special occasions are centered around family gatherings, reinforcing the close-knit values that define them.
As business owners, Richard and Kate understand the importance of community involvement. While running a restaurant keeps them busy, they make an effort to participate in local events and contribute where they can.  Often this is through donations that support neighborhood activities and causes, and recently also with supporting the hometown pub of Greet Moraga. It’s a meaningful way they give back to the place that has supported them.
Lou’s Chicken Shop stands as a reflection of their journey: hardworking, family-oriented, and community-focused. For Richard and Kate, Moraga isn’t just where they do business; it’s where they’re raising their family and building lasting connections.
