Haidlen Ford: 70 Years of Family, Community, and Commitment

Since opening its doors in 1955, Haidlen Ford has been more than a car dealership—it’s been part of Oakdale’s story. Now celebrating 70 years in business, this third-generation family dealership continues to thrive by focusing on what matters most: people.
Founded in 1955 by Sidney Haidlen, a civic-minded local known for donating equipment to community projects and supporting early Oakdale organizations like the Jaycees, the dealership quickly became a staple in town. Sidney’s dedication to service and integrity laid the groundwork for a lasting legacy.
The business passed to the second generation in the 1980s with Tom Haidlen, and today, Erich Haidlen—who began working full-time in 1998—continues that tradition alongside his wife,  Kelly, with his father still making regular visits. “We’re upholding seven decades of tradition with our family being in Stanislaus County,” Erich says. “It’s not about quick sales—it’s about long-term relationships.”
That commitment is evident in the way the Haidlen family builds trust with customers, often knowing them by name across multiple generations. One of Erich’s favorite memories is handing keys to a young man whose grandfather bought his first car from Erich’s own grandfather.
While the auto industry has evolved—especially with consolidations and the decline of small, independent dealerships—Haidlen Ford has adapted without losing its roots. The business expanded in 2000 and now offers modern conveniences like remote delivery and online buying, but Erich still brings a personal touch, even driving cars to customers himself when needed.
The Haidlen family’s community focus has never wavered. Julia Florence Haidlen, who passed away in 2024, was a vibrant presence in Oakdale’s social circles, known for her warmth and bridge nights with friends. The dealership’s commitment to balance is evident in its hours—it has been closed on Sundays since its inception and now observes weekends off since the COVID-19 pandemic, prioritizing family time for both staff and customers.
“Oakdale is unique. These are real people, real families,” Erich says. “It’s never just been about the cars.”
As plans begin for their 75th anniversary, the Haidlen family remains grateful for Oakdale’s loyalty—and proud to serve a town that still values personal connection and long-standing relationships.
