El Camino Homeless Organization (ECHO) has long served communities across San Luis Obispo County, with shelters in both Paso Robles and Atascadero. Our shelters provide safe, secure 90-day housing along with meals, individualized case management, and life-skills programs that help to provide a pathway back into stable housing for individuals and families. Beyond shelter, ECHO conducts extensive outreach to community members who are unhoused, meeting immediate needs while building the trust necessary to connect people to services, shelter, and long term support. Since 2001, ECHO has been dedicated to empowering individuals and families across San Luis Obispo County to make positive, lasting changes in their lives. Through essential services such as food, shelter, and supportive programs, we provide a pathway toward stability and self-sufficiency. 

     Perhaps no one embodies ECHO's mission better than former resident Marcella. She arrived at the Paso Robles shelter with her young son, who has autism, and credits having a private room with making all the difference. The stability and predictability of their own space gave her son the calm environment he needed during a difficult transition and provided both of them with a sense of security. After completing the 90-day program, Marcella didn't just move forward, she came back. Today, she volunteers regularly, cooking meals, serving dinner, checking in on residents, and offering a smile or kind word to everyone she meets. She knows people by name, and they know her. Marcella shares her story openly and proudly, knowing that her experience can offer hope to others facing their hardest days. "ECHO means a lot to me," she shared. For her, returning isn't about revisiting a difficult chapter, it's about helping others find the same support and hope she once found here. 

     ECHO operates shelters in Paso Robles and Atascadero, offering a combined capacity of 130 beds. In addition to emergency shelter, both locations provide daily meals, case management, and access to essential services for those in need. A cornerstone of their work is the daily dinner program, offered 365 days a year to anyone in the community. Prepared and served by volunteers, local businesses, and partners, these meals nourish thousands annually and they create a welcoming space for connection, helping break down stigma and foster a stronger, more compassionate and unified community. Access to showers and laundry facilities also plays a critical role in restoring dignity and stability. Both shelters offer shower programs to the broader community, and in Paso Robles, individuals can also access laundry services, allowing them to care for basic needs while connecting with staff, resources, and community support. 

     ECHO is an incredible organization doing truly impactful, life changing work in our community. Services are designed to be genuinely accessible to anyone seeking help, meeting people where they are during one of the most challenging times in their lives. Just as important is the organization’s commitment to second, third, and fourth (and so on) chances. The staff never gives up on people. They understand that every individual’s situation is complex, and they lead with compassion, flexibility, and belief in each person’s ability to move forward. That kind of dedication to meeting immediate needs and truly walking alongside someone on their journey is incredibly inspiring to be a part of.

     The primary challenge ECHO has faced is in securing full funding for the project. While they've  made significant progress, raising over 67% of our $6 million goal, approximately $2 million remains. ECHO’s work transforms lives by providing safe shelter and comprehensive support to those experiencing homelessness. They strive to help individuals and families regain stability through housing, case management, and programs designed to support long-term independence. In Paso Robles especially, the sense of community support is tangible, whether through shared meals, volunteerism, or local partnerships. What’s most rewarding is seeing not just immediate needs met, but lasting change take root, helping families move from crisis to stability and toward a more hopeful future.
