Genesis Rivera
A World Champion in the Making
What's your name, age and grade?
My name is Genesis Rivera, I am 7 years old and I’m in second grade, and I train Jiu Jitsu at Virtus BJJ.
How long have you lived in Paso Robles, and what do you like best about it?
I have lived in Paso Robles my whole life. My favorite part of Paso Robles is downtown because there you can find the movie theater, the park and places to eat ice cream.
When did you start playing, and what inspired you to pursue this sport? Do you have any sports idols or role models?
I started training Jiu Jitsu when I was almost 6 years old. I was inspired to start because I wanted to learn self-defense, and one year later I also started training in Wrestling.
I don’t have one specific idol or role model, but I admire the people who have achieved greatness in these sports. I like to look at what they’ve accomplished, not just as athletes but as individuals, and draw inspiration from their journeys. My hope is that one day I can follow in their footsteps and become someone others can look up to as well.
Tell us about your favorite moment, memory, or milestone thus far in your athletic journey.
My favorite memory was when I got promoted to a new belt on the day of my birthday. All my Virtus family sang Happy Birthday to me, and I almost cried from the emotion.
Are there any specific values or life lessons you've gained from your involvement in sports?
Some of the values I have learned are to never give up and to keep fighting until the very last moment.
Have any coaches or mentors played a significant role in your athletic development?
My professor and all my coaches from Virtus have played a significant role in helping me learn and improve in my sports. Most importantly, they taught me to value my family.
What are your future goals and aspirations, in sports and beyond?
With God's help, I want to continue training to become a world champion.
