REDWINGS HORSE SANCTUARY

A conversation with Sara Ruggerone about the importance of the Sanctuary and their upcoming event that offers the community different opportunities to be a part of this important organization.

Can you provide an overview of the initiative or project you're involved in and its mission?
SR: Redwings Horse Sanctuary is dedicated to ending equine suffering through rescue, rehabilitation, sanctuary, education, and outreach. In addition to rescuing abused and neglected horses, we focus on preventing future neglect by educating the public about responsible horse care. In 2014, we expanded our mission by launching a Thoroughbred rehabilitation and retraining program, helping retired racehorses transition into successful second careers and loving adoptive homes.
What type of services does Redwings offer?
SR: Redwings works closely with Sheriff's Offices and Animal Services agencies throughout California, providing a safe haven for horses rescued from cases of cruelty, neglect, or abandonment. We offer medical care, rehabilitation, sanctuary, and adoption opportunities, giving vulnerable horses the chance to heal and thrive while supporting communities responding to equine welfare cases.
What's your role, and how long have you been involved?
SR: I joined Redwings in 2013 as Equine Care Manager and oversee all aspects of horse care, rehabilitation, rescue intake, veterinary coordination, facility operations, and adoption placement. I also serve as Volunteer Coordinator and manage accreditation and compliance. My goal is to ensure every horse receives compassionate care and the opportunity for a healthy, fulfilling future.
What inspired you to dedicate your career to this work?
SR: Horses have been my passion since childhood. After studying Equine Science and building a career in the equine industry, I spent years rescuing and rehabilitating neglected horses alongside my mother. Those experiences reinforced my belief in the power of compassion and inspired me to dedicate my career to improving the lives of horses.
What challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?
SR: Rescue work comes with both triumph and heartbreak. Saying goodbye to horses who have become family is never easy, and witnessing severe neglect can be emotionally difficult. But seeing frightened, neglected horses recover, regain their trust, and flourish reminds us why this work is so important.
How have your efforts impacted the community, and what's been the most rewarding part?
SR: The greatest reward is watching horses transform. Seeing animals arrive frightened, sick, or neglected and then recover to live safe, happy lives is incredibly fulfilling. Today, nearly 90 equines call Redwings home, and seeing them healthy, loved, and thriving makes every challenge worthwhile.
What upcoming events or projects are you excited about, and how can the community get involved?
SR: We're excited for our 35th Anniversary Gala & Benefit on October 17, 2026, at the Paso Robles Event Center. The evening will celebrate 35 years of rescue and rehabilitation while raising critical funds for the nearly 90 horses in our care. A special highlight will be a live demonstration by renowned horseman Warwick Schiller, along with an exclusive VIP meet-and-greet. Community members can support Redwings by attending the event, volunteering, donating, or helping spread awareness of our mission.
