More Than a Game

How Riverstone resident Nausheen Merchant is building friendships, confidence, and community one Mahjong table at a time.

For Riverstone resident Nausheen Merchant, Mahjong is far more than a game. It's a bridge that brings people together, sparks friendships, and creates community in a world that often feels increasingly disconnected.

"No two games are ever the same," says Nausheen, founder of Merchant of Mahjong, a Houston-based company offering lessons, events, and private Mahjong experiences. "That's what makes it so fascinating. Every game presents a new challenge, a new strategy, and a new opportunity to learn."

Like many players, Nausheen was initially drawn to Mahjong by its beautiful tiles and intriguing complexity. What she discovered was something much deeper. Beyond the strategy lies a game that encourages patience, adaptability, and meaningful human connection.

Today, through Merchant of Mahjong, she teaches beginners through Mahjong 101 classes and helps experienced players sharpen their skills through advanced instruction, guided play, and strategic coaching. She also hosts private lessons, community events, fundraisers, birthday celebrations, girls' nights, and Mahjong parties throughout the Houston area.

While the game itself is engaging, Nausheen says the real magic happens around the table." In a world where so much communication happens through  screens, Mahjong creates a reason for people to gather in person," she explains. "Phones get put away, conversations start naturally, and friendships develop."

Over the years, she has watched complete strangers become friends, neighbors connect, mothers and daughters learn together, and groups of women create communities that extend far beyond their weekly games.

One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching has been seeing the confidence her students gain. Many arrive intimidated by the tiles, the card, and the strategy. A few weeks later, they're hosting games of their own, teaching friends, and introducing new players to the experience.

Through Merchant of Mahjong, Nausheen has introduced hundreds of people to a game that has brought purpose, friendship, and joy into her own life. She has taught families, children, husbands, and friends, often watching Mahjong become a beloved weekly tradition.

And while every game unfolds differently, the outcome is often the same: stronger relationships, lasting memories, and a growing sense of community.
Just like the game itself, Nausheen's Mahjong journey continues to surprise her in the very best ways.
