The Wishing Crane Project
A Flight of Kindness and Hope

The Wishing Crane Project at Ivy Park Senior Center
In a world where small acts of kindness can make a huge difference, The Wishing Crane Project (TWCP) has been quietly spreading hope and positivity in the Seven Oaks and Bakersfield communities. What started as a passion project between two young women – Lauren Trinh, now a college freshman at the University of Southern California (USC), and Aliyah Candaza, a senior at Stockdale High School – has grown into a local organization dedicated to instilling positivity and uplifting hospital patients and hospices.
Inspired by the original Arizona-based branch of TWCP, Lauren and Aliyah set out to bring the same spirit of kindness and humanity to Bakersfield. In nearly two years, the Bakersfield branch has touched countless lives, delivering heartfelt messages, handmade paper cranes, and other small crafts to local facilities like Hoffmann Hospice, Kern Medical, and Dignity Health Memorial Hospital. Each crane carries a message of faith, reminding patients they are not alone.
The Wishing Crane Project’s impact reaches beyond the patients themselves. TWCP has created a space where volunteers come together, make meaningful contributions, and bond over a shared goal. Events like crane-making sessions and bingo games at Ivy Park Senior Living have brightened days for the residents while bringing volunteers closer as a community. At a recent event, one senior at Ivy Park admired the colorful paper cranes, smiling as she said, “Oh, these are sooo cute, I really want to make one for my granddaughter.” Moments like these remind volunteers that even the smallest gestures can trigger connection and joy leaving lasting impressions.
But TWCP is more than just crafting. It is about creating a chain reaction of kindness. Through these simple and small gestures, the project has promoted a sense of unity and purpose among its members, allowing younger people to become leaders, make new friends, and directly impact those in need. Volunteers don’t just gain service hours; they also gain perspective and the understanding that their actions matter.
If you are looking for a way to make a difference, The Wishing Crane Project is always open to new members. Whether you’re passionate about instilling positivity in the community or just wanting to try something new, the organization offers a welcoming environment where every crane folded and every message written brings warmth to those who need it the most. Additionally, you can gain leadership experience, volunteer hours, and friendships along the way.
