Strings of the Heart
The Memorial High School Orchestra is more than a fine arts program; it is a living legacy of musical excellence, dedication, and community. With a rich history, the program sets the standard for orchestral performance in both Texas and on some of the most prestigious stages in the country.
Today, the Memorial Orchestra includes six string orchestras and one symphony ensemble, all of which perform regularly throughout the year. The program’s top ensemble, the Memorial Sinfonia, has been named Texas’ Honor Orchestra three times and has performed in Chicago’s Orchestra Hall as well as five times at New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall—an extraordinary accomplishment for a high school program.
Comprised of approximately 195 students in grades nine through twelve, the orchestra reflects the strength of Spring Branch ISD’s commitment to music education. Many students begin their musical journeys as early as kindergarten through elementary Suzuki programs, while others discover their passion in sixth grade through middle school orchestra—proving there is always room to grow, no matter when the first note is played.
What truly sets the Memorial High School Orchestra apart is its culture. The program is a tight-knit community of students who value the arts and take pride in performing for their school and the wider community. Daily practice, mutual support, and a shared pursuit of excellence create an environment where students thrive both musically and personally.
At the heart of the program are orchestra directors Mr. Matthew Chan and Mrs. Leslie Campbell. Their tireless dedication before, during, and after school ensures that each student receives the guidance needed to succeed. From preparing students for Region and State auditions to UIL competitions and solo and ensemble performances, their passion and leadership are key drivers of the orchestra’s continued success.
For Danny and Parker Balombin, the orchestra experience is also deeply personal. Parker plays the double bass and was awarded the 5th chair last year in the Region 27 orchestra. He credits his older brother Danny for inspiring him to join the orchestra in sixth grade, despite having never played an instrument before. Danny, who plays viola, is part of a chamber orchestra on Saturdays called Opus 1. Both are hoping to place in Region 27 next year! At Spring Branch Middle School, Mrs. Katie Hemphill's early instruction helped both brothers progress from beginners to advanced musicians in a matter of months. Their shared journey highlights the lasting impact of strong mentorship and supportive educators.
The orchestra also offers unforgettable experiences beyond the classroom. In odd-numbered years, students travel to Corpus Christi for an intensive retreat, receiving instruction from guest professors while bonding as an ensemble. In even-numbered years, the program ventures out of state to destinations such as California, New York, or Boston, where students train with professional musicians and perform in renowned venues.
Throughout the year, the Memorial Orchestra participates in UIL competitions, solo and ensemble events, and seasonal concerts held on campus. Several Memorial students have earned placement in Region 27 Orchestra and State Orchestra, underscoring the program’s high level of achievement.
Incoming students can join by auditioning the summer after eighth grade, with placement opportunities ranging from Philharmonia and Lyrica (JV) to Sinfonia (Varsity). Ultimately, the Memorial High School Orchestra offers students a smaller, welcoming community within a large high school—one built on shared goals, discipline, and a love of music.
