Dive in: A Look at Memorial High School Aquatics

Memorial High School Aquatics is making waves—literally! Guided by longtime Head Coach Jason Mauss and Assistant Coach Dr. Elaine Pangle, this powerhouse program brings together Swim, Dive, and Water Polo athletes who are dedicated, tight-knit, and always striving for excellence.

For Amy Martin, joining the large and spirited MHS Aquatics community was a thrilling change from her smaller team at Houston Racquet Club. “Being surrounded by teammates who push me in practice and the team spirit at meets has been such a positive experience,” she shares.

Her love for the sport began with her very first coach at HRC, Daniel Graviss. “He taught me everything I know,” Amy says. “He helped me set goals and visualize how to reach them. I’m so grateful he still supports me today.” At MHS, she’s inspired daily by Coach Mauss, who has led the program for more than 25 years with unwavering commitment, and by Coach Pangle, whose competitive swimming background adds valuable insight and technique to every practice.

Amy also looks up to the team’s girl captains, who she describes as "big sisters” and role models in and out of the pool. “They share so much wisdom from their years on the team. I take their advice to heart, and I’m grateful for the way they encourage me.”

That sense of support is at the heart of Memorial Aquatics. “We’re hardworking, but also like a big family,” Amy explains. “Our coaches always remind us that you have more to give than you think. We show up for each other every day.”

This season has already brought excitement and standout achievements. Over Thanksgiving break, the team traveled to Corpus Christi for the annual Hornet TISCA meet, where the girls’ team placed first overall, and the boys finished third. Amy, alongside Callie Robertson, Sarah Rahn, and Lexi Smith, helped set a pool record in the 400 freestyle relay with an impressive 3:32.59.

Another highlight? Amy’s unforgettable moment at the 6th Annual SBISD Donut Meet, where she broke the W.W. Emmons Natatorium record in the 100 freestyle with a 52.06. “I didn’t even realize I had done it until I heard my name over the loudspeaker. It was awesome.” That same meet brought another victory when her 200 freestyle relay team, Callie Robertson, Amy Martin, Cate Casper, and Lexi Smith, set yet another pool record with a 1:38.34.

Memorial Aquatics competes in district meets throughout the fall and winter, leading up to districts, regionals, and ultimately the 6A State Championship in February 2026. The program has a proud history of producing collegiate athletes who go on to compete at top schools, including LSU and Texas A&M.

For anyone inspired to dive in, literally, Amy encourages future Mustangs to reach out. “Contact Coach Mauss to try out for swim, dive, or water polo. We’d love to have you!”
