Ernie

Ernie has quickly settled into Wash Park life with his owner, Hanna Powers. After moving to Denver in April and landing in the neighborhood in May, Hanna knew right away it was home. The dog-friendly atmosphere, fenced yard, and easy access to the park made it the perfect place, and Ernie’s favorite pastime is now sitting on the front porch, happily people-watching all day.
Ernie is a rescue boy of unknown age and a very questionable breed, which only adds to his charm. Shaggy, sweet, and often described as a walking mop, he keeps everyone guessing. Hanna adopted him from Pet Helpers on James Island in Charleston, a rescue close to her heart.
They met during a Clear the Shelters adoption event when Ernie appeared as a live guest on Hanna’s morning show while she was working as a morning anchor for an NBC affiliate in Charleston. Nervous and pitiful on camera, he made it clear he was coming home, despite Hanna not planning to add another dog to her already full house.
His name came from Hanna’s mom, Leslie Powers, who had been saving “Ernie” for a future dog. With his gray, wiry hair and old-soul personality, the name fit instantly. Though shy, Ernie is fiercely loyal and happiest when close to Hanna. His signature party trick is offering a sweet nose boop when asked for a kiss, and he’s a bit of a food snob, preferring jerky-style treats and the occasional rare bite of cheese. He loves Wash Park walks, backyard sunbathing, neighborhood patios, and visits to The Urban Dogg, which helps maintain his signature scruffy look perfectly.
