Here Comes the Sun

Puget Sound Energy’s brilliant investment in The Bellevue Boys & Girls Club!

The Bellevue Boys & Girls Club will take a major step toward sustainability thanks to a generous $250,000 grant from Puget Sound Energy (PSE) Enhanced Incentives Program. The grant funding will cover the installation of solar panels at the club’s new headquarters—a move that supports environmental goals while strengthening long-term financial stability.

PSE’s Solar Grant Program helps nonprofits and community organizations overcome barriers to clean energy adoption by reducing or eliminating upfront costs. For the Bellevue Boys & Girls Club, the grant will cover expenses for outfitting the rooftop with a full solar array, freeing up fundraising dollars for the club’s primary mission: serving kids and families in the Bellevue area. The system is designed to generate power even on the cloudiest Northwest days, and any surplus energy will flow back to the grid, earning credits on future bills.

Puget Sound Energy’s commitment to renewable energy is outlined in its Clean Energy Implementation Plan, which sets ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and expanding clean electricity across the region. Through grants and incentives, PSE helps nonprofits and tribal organizations shrink their environmental footprint. The Bellevue Boys & Girls Club project stands out for its scale and its potential to inspire others. The message is clear; clean energy isn’t just for big corporations—it’s for community organizations, families, and most importantly, it’s for local kids.

This isn’t the first time PSE has partnered with the Club. Previous Green Power grants helped advance clean energy initiatives, but this latest gift is the largest to date. It’s a one-time investment with lasting benefits that will continue to make an impact for years to come through lower utility costs, more resources freed up for youth programs, and a powerful example of what happens when business and community interests work together toward a greater good.

This innovative project began with people who understood the value of community-minded purpose—among them, Phil Haines, a Bellevue Boys & Girls Club board member and PSE’s Director of Energy Supply and Trading. With strong board engagement and committed leadership, the vision became reality. This represents more than a financial contribution; it’s a partnership built on shared values and a belief in a brighter future for kids and families throughout the region.

This investment also comes at a critical time. Rising costs are squeezing nonprofits everywhere, and energy bills can quickly drain funds meant for mission-critical programming. By locking in energy savings now, the solar array provides stability and predictability in energy savings. It also creates an educational opportunity. As kids walk through the doors, they’ll see sustainability in action—and staff are already exploring ways to integrate the solar project into curriculum and programming.

The solar array will be installed in 2026 and is expected to serve the club for decades. But its impact begins now as engineers, educators, donors, and volunteers come together to make it happen. This project is more than infrastructure—it’s an investment in resilience, cooperation, and a healthier planet. It’s proof that the future is bright when people work together.
