The Alley Cats: Two Decades of Spirit, Friendship, and Joy

The Alley Cats

In the heart of Hershey, a quiet alley between Para and Areba Avenues has witnessed
something extraordinary over the past twenty years. What began as a simple neighborhood fitness initiative has blossomed into a vibrant community known as the Alley Cats—a group whose story is less about exercise and more about the enduring power friendship.
It all started in June 2006, when Amy Thomas, a neighbor with a passion for wellness and connection, invited locals to join her for early morning workouts. The group, affectionately dubbed the Alley Cats, met at 6:00 a.m. twice a week, braving theelements with layers, laughter, and determination. Amy’s creative challenges and unwavering encouragement kept everyone motivated, but it was the camaraderie that truly set the group apart.
More Than Just Workouts
For the Alley Cats, fitness was the entry point, but friendship became the foundation. Members like Kathy Giovanniello and Jane Brockman credit the group with transforming their health and outlook. "They have encouraged me to come to this class a few times a week and get stronger and stronger!" Kathy shares. Jane adds, "The camaraderie makes a huge difference in my attendance to class…huge. I am MUCH healthier now than when I joined." But the group’s impact goes far beyond physical strength. When Nora Gould faced health challenges, the Alley Cats adapted workouts and offered unwavering support. When Joellen Myers hiked the Grand Canyon and Machu Picchu, her friends cheered her on. And when life threw curveballs—illness, injury, or loss—the Alley Cats were there with meals, hugs, and heartfelt gestures.
Celebrating Life, Together
The Alley Cats’ calendar is filled with more than just workouts. Breakfasts, theater outings, and spontaneous adventures—like hiking trips and Broadway shows—have become cherished traditions. Members recall trips to New York City, group celebrations for retirements and birthdays, and even a Downton Abbey-themed dinner. These moments of joy are woven into the fabric of the group, creating memories that last a lifetime.
The Heart of Support
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the Alley Cats is their unwavering support for one another. When a member’s loved one was ill or passed away, the group rallied with food, flowers, and presence. When someone faced a personal crisis, there was always a listening ear and a group hug. As Hershey resident Doreen Hand puts it, "All of the little things—good reads, TV series recommendations, funny memes, travel advice, and both silly and serious conversations—quickly add up to such a deep connection and friendship."
Looking Back, Moving Forward
As the Alley Cats celebrate twenty years, their gratitude is palpable. "Amy is the GLUE! She holds everyone together and at the same time makes each of us feel special and unique." says Sue Schenkel. The group has weathered seasons, pandemics, and personal milestones, always emerging stronger and more connected. Their story is a testament to the power of showing up, not just for a workout, but for each other. In a world that often feels hurried and disconnected, the Alley Cats remind us that true wellness is found in community. Their spirit, friendship, and joy are a beacon—proof that when neighbors come together, they can build something beautiful, lasting, and life-changing.
