Artistik Edge Hair Studio: Three Decades of Care, Community, and Creativity

A Lake Highlands neighbor helping guests look and feel their best for more than 30 years

Artistik Edge Hair Studio has been a part of the Lake Highlands community for more than three decades, serving neighbors not just with beautiful hair, but with genuine care and connection. Known for expert color services and great cuts for both men and women, the studio also focuses on long-term hair health by prescribing and carrying professional haircare products to help guests achieve their hair goals at home. In addition to salon services, the boutique at Artistik Edge is filled with fun gifts and accessories, making it a welcoming space for both self-care and thoughtful shopping.
The story of Artistik Edge began in 1989, when the Terri Hoover owner purchased a small “hole-in-the-wall” salon at the corner of Audelia and Buckingham. Fresh out of cosmetology school and navigating life as a single mom, she describes those early days as both daunting and transformative. Over the years, the business has grown and evolved—moving locations three times, adding chairs and stylists, and building a team that feels more like family than staff.
A pivotal part of that growth came through longtime partner Rebecca Roberts. Rebecca joined the salon more than 28 years ago as an assistant and became a business partner 14 years ago. Alongside powerhouse stylist Anita, who is still with the salon today, and the late Marsha, a respected salon owner who joined the team in the early 2000s, the foundation of Artistik Edge was shaped by collaboration, mentorship, and resilience. Today, that spirit continues with a mix of longtime guests and new faces who feel at home the moment they walk through the door.
What truly sets Artistik Edge apart is its commitment to growing people, not just stylists. About 20 years ago, during a particularly challenging season, the leadership team sought outside guidance and began intentionally building career paths for hairstylists. The result is a level-based system that rewards education, experience, and dedication, allowing stylists to grow professionally while being supported by a team-first culture. Guests are often “shop clients,” meaning they trust the entire team and are comfortable seeing any stylist with availability. That trust speaks volumes about the environment the salon has created—one where coworkers genuinely want the best for one another and for their guests.
Today, the owner works more behind the scenes, finding joy in watching young stylists come in hungry to learn and grow. One of the most meaningful milestones is seeing a stylist transition from hourly pay to commission, a moment that reflects hard work, confidence, and professional achievement.
Artistik Edge is also transparent about the realities of the industry. As a commission salon, missed appointments and last-minute cancellations directly affect a stylist’s livelihood, something many guests may not fully realize. The team values mutual respect and communication, believing that strong relationships are built on understanding both sides of the chair.
Hairdressers, they say, do far more than hair. They are listeners, encouragers, and trusted confidants, offering support in moments both lighthearted and deeply personal. That care extends beyond the salon walls. Over the years, the team has stepped in during difficult life situations, supported families in need, and consistently given back to the community. For more than 30 years, Artistik Edge has donated gift cards to local schools, choosing to support every fundraiser by weaving community giving into their staff development path.
Looking ahead, the plan is a thoughtful transition of leadership, with the owner gradually handing over the reins to Rebecca while continuing to live out her faith and service both locally and beyond. After decades in Lake Highlands, Artistik Edge remains grateful to be part of a neighborhood filled with long-standing relationships, shared history, and a strong sense of belonging.
As they see it, Lake Highlands has a heartbeat, and local businesses help keep it alive. Artistik Edge Hair Studio is proud to have been part of that rhythm for so many years—and looks forward to many more.
