Love Where You Belong: Growing Up in Lake Highlands
From playground laughs to community events, one high schooler reflects on the pride, friendships, and lessons that make Lake Highlands feel like home.
Elementary School
Even as a kid, Lake Highlands had a way of making you feel part of something bigger. I remember running across the playground at Lake Highlands Elementary, trying to keep up with friends during recess, laughing at the little things, and feeling like I belonged. That sense of connection stuck with me as I moved on to Lake Highlands Junior High and now Lake Highlands High School, where I’ll be a senior next year. Growing up here means so many familiar faces have been part of my story for years — some of the teachers who guided me when I was younger are still around today, and that continuity makes being part of this community feel really special.
Being raised here also teaches you pretty quickly that how you show up matters. Whether it’s at school events, games, or just running into someone around town, there’s pride in being a part of Lake Highlands. Wearing red, black, and white isn’t just school spirit — it’s representing something bigger than yourself.
Heading into my senior year, I’m focused on continuing to grow as a leader. Leadership isn’t about being the loudest or holding the most titles. It’s about being intentional: showing up prepared, staying consistent, treating people with respect, and understanding that how you handle even small moments can make a big difference.
One of the coolest things about growing up here is how full circle everything feels. I’m now involved in community events with people who once guided me or encouraged me when I was younger.
It’s a strange but meaningful feeling to realize you’re no longer just learning — you’re someone others might be learning from now.
Leadership doesn’t have to be flashy to matter. It’s in the little things — helping someone figure something out, showing up when it’s hard, or simply being dependable. Those are the moments people notice and remember. That’s what makes a community strong, and that’s what makes me proud to be part of Lake Highlands.
