Color Outside the Ordinary
How acclaimed Texas painter Chris Calvary creates art that stops people in their tracks
For more than three decades, celebrated Texas artist Chris Calvary has built a reputation for creating striking, emotionally driven works that command attention the moment you walk into a room.
Known for his bold color palettes, large-scale abstracts, expressive nudes, and unmistakable signature style, Calvary’s work has become highly sought after by collectors, athletes, musicians, television personalities, and luxury homeowners alike. Yet despite his impressive clientele, his process remains deeply personal.
“I’m inspired by each client’s story and desires,” Chris explains. “That relationship makes the art far more meaningful.”
His artistic journey began at just ten years old with sketching, eventually evolving into oil painting before transitioning to acrylics. Now his signature medium. At only sixteen, while sketching beneath an original Andy Warhol at NorthPark Center, Chris was approached by legendary developer and art collector Raymond Nasher. That encounter led to his very first commissioned piece and launched a career that continues to thrive today.
While many artists create for galleries alone, Chris approaches each project with the mindset of designing a one-of-a-kind masterpiece specifically for the client and the space it will live in. He carefully considers everything from architecture and lighting to texture, scale, and emotional energy.
“I want my work to bring a wow factor into a home or business,” he says. “It should celebrate life, color, and individuality.”
Influenced by artistic legends such as Willem de Kooning, Salvador Dalí, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Chris blends abstraction with movement and emotion in a way that feels both refined and fearless.
Despite years of success, Chris admits one of his greatest challenges has been learning not to over-critique himself.
“I’m a perfectionist,” he says with a smile. “But art is really the beauty of imperfection expressed with style and grace.”
Today, Chris continues to showcase his work through events such as the North Dallas Artist Studio Tour and the Dallas Art Fair, while building a remarkable legacy one vibrant brushstroke at a time.
