The Mental Load, Managed!

How Meal Prep Mama is Revitalizing the Family Dinner

Imagine this scenario: It’s Thursday. You haven’t done a grocery run since Sunday. You’re bored with your carousel of routine meals, and the thought of planning, prepping and cooking another dinner is enough to put you over the edge after a long day. I’m sure we have all had the experience of dreading making yet another dinner. Enter Meal Prep Mama, a healthy, homemade meal delivery service run by the passionate and talented Kristin McDonough.

Meal Prep Mama officially launched in 2023, but its roots stretch back much further. McDonough grew up loving food, learning her way around the kitchen by watching her mother, Linda. Food was her original love language. When McDonough gave birth to her son Connor in 2014, her friends organized a meal train. While she deeply appreciated the sentiment, it was when the first meal was delivered during those early postpartum weeks that McDonough had the epiphany: “This is nothing short of a miracle!”

Seeking to replicate that relief for others, McDonough began hosting freezer meal exchanges with friends. However, she noticed that neglected frozen entrees inevitably wound up in the trash months later— an outcome that felt incredibly wasteful.

To eliminate waste but continue the joy of community and cooking, McDonough began hosting meal prep parties. She curated the menu, handled the grocery shopping, and opened her kitchen to friends who gathered to chop, measure, and mix together. Instead of freezing the results, each guest left with fresh, oven-ready meals for the week ahead.

The turning point came when a friend suggested that McDonough handle all the prep work herself in exchange for payment. Intrigued by the idea of monetizing her culinary passion, she posted a few oven-ready options for purchase on a local Facebook Moms group. The orders rolled in immediately.

During this entrepreneurial spark, McDonough had been working with a business coach and was eager to pivot into truly meaningful work. On a personal note, she was grieving the recent loss of her mom who had always dreamed of starting a catering business but never saw it come to fruition. In May of 2023, the dreams of past and present aligned. Meal Prep Mama started with pen-and-paper orders and has since grown into a legitimate, widely successful local business.

Meal Prep Mama’s goal is to help families eat healthily while eliminating decision fatigue by simplifying the overall process. Weekly menus consist of five meal options with a breakfast option as well, and no meal repeats within a month. Serving sizes are for two or four people and can be ordered in any combination. Beyond dinner, the business offers popular snack options like fig bar and trail mix protein balls, alongside fresh salads like Caesar or Thai chicken and quinoa. Every dish is gluten-free, organic, and delivered fresh to your doorstep. It proudly delivers widely to the Western Suburbs of Chicago including Western Springs, Hinsdale, La Grange, Westmont, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, and Clarendon Hills.

What sets Meal Prep Mama apart from traditional meal kits or takeout is that meals do not arrive precooked, but fresh and fully prepped, ready for the oven or crock-pot. McDonough reflects on this distinction: “I help people still be able to have home-cooked meals by mom or dad, just without all the extra work. I remove the mental load of planning and prepping, but—importantly-–families still get to cook food with their kids in the kitchen. I don’t want the family dinner to become a thing of the past.”

Taking care of people is the heartbeat of the operation, which is why a percentage of each meal purchased goes directly to feeding children in need through organizations like Feed My Starving Children and the LIFT Market, a grocery-style food pantry in Lombard.

Looking ahead, Meal Prep Mama is expanding its reach by partnering with Sage Wellness Sanctuary, set to open in Hinsdale this summer. This collaboration merges McDonough’s nutritional focus with a broader vision for holistic well-being in the community.

Even as the business scales, McDonough's foundational love for feeding people remains unchanged. “I still love it," she says. "I love delivering food to people and seeing the joy it brings them. It’s the easiest thing to give away.”
